Playground Safely at Altadore School

The playground equipment, fields and compound space are for students to use and enjoy. It is a shared space for all students, so everyone needs to be thoughtful, considerate and kind with using these areas. We need students to play safely to avoid injuries to themselves or others. Safety is our first concern. These expectations are for all students during school hours (including Before and After School Program hours).

These are ways of safely using our playground. The ideas came from students and staff working together to make Altadore School a place to learn and play safely and while having fun!

    1. During recess and noon hour, students need to stay out of these areas because they are not supervised:
      a. Any area off school property,
      b. Area behind the shed,
      c. Edible Garden
    2. Rocks, dirt and sand cannot be thrown anytime. Digging in the dirt is also not permitted.
    3. Snow and Ice:
      a. Cannot be thrown at anytime,
      b. Snow creations belong to the ‘creator’ during the time of building/playing,
      c. Be careful on icy areas of the field and compound; you can easily fall
      d. Stay off large snow piles,
      e. Any areas marked with pylons (icy, watery patches or snow piles) means ‘stay off’.
    4. Jumping: Students can jump off equipment as long as it is shoulder height or lower; this includes the ‘Christmas tree’ and the creative playground.
    5. Saucer swing:
      a. Maximum of 4 people at a time
    6. Climbing Equipment:
      a. No sitting on top of the bars,
      b. Share spaces with others; do not block people from ‘passing’,
      c. Clothing not to be used to hang onto or assist with moving across something,
      d. Play safe; keep your eyes open
    7. Slide:
      a. Feet first, sitting on your bottom,
      b. One person on the slide at one time,
      c. Keep the slide clear of ‘stuff’ (no rocks, mud or snow on the slide please)
    8. Swings
      a. No jumping off swings,
      b. No walking in front or back of moving swings,
      c. Share with others, please take turns
    9. Field games:
      a. No tackling,
      b. No play fighting
    10. Electronics:
      a. Any electronics (cell phones, ipods, etc…) must be turned OFF and kept in a backpack when at school.
    11. When using the Owl’s nest, remember to stay in the area between the path and towards the fence.
      a. Please leave large objects (rocks/ logs, etc…) on the ground.
