Principal's Message

Oct./Nov. 2018

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Nelson Mandela
Hello Trojans and Families!
How can one ascertain that fall has arrived? I would argue that it is not the crisp air or the leaves changing colors. It is not the Halloween costumes in stores or the cozy sweaters coming out of the closet. I know that fall has truly arrived when everything seems to be pumpkin-spiced all of a sudden!
September feels like a bit of a blur. I want to thank everyone for their patience as our System moves to PowerSchool. I know that it caused some stress and anxiety, with our students, their families and with the staff, but I am most thankful that we came together to ensure our students’ needs were priority number one. We have the largest student population at Bowness High School in seven years! We are on the way up, Bowness! This is great news as more students = more staff = more resources for students. Families, thank you, sincerely, for entrusting your children to us.
We had our first School Council meeting in September and had a wonderful turnout. Please know that parents/guardians are all welcome, even if you could not make that first meeting. The next Council meeting is on October 10 at 6:30 pm in the cafeteria. I want to make sure you are aware of the layers of support we have at Bowness for your student. We have instituted a Grade 10 Homeroom this year (Bow Time) on Mondays to provide our large Grade 10 class with information, study skills, organizational skills and a strong connection to a teacher in the school. This block is mandatory for all Grade 10 students. Teachers at Bowness are willing to be flexible and will support your student as best they can. Please ensure that any classroom issues are first communicated to the teacher, as this is the best way to solve problems. If the issue persists, please contact either Mr. Koop (Assistant Principal, last names A-K) or Ms. Dalton (Assistant Principal, last names L-Z). Our Student Services team is also here to support your student in post-secondary discussions and applications, scholarship applications, IPP support, career advice, socio-emotional support and community support connections. Mr. Walyuchow is here to help students gain employment with the aim at receiving high school credits for Work Experience. Ms. Greenfield is our Graduation Coach, providing an extra level of support for our Indigenous students. Brooke, from All in for Youth (United Way), is in our Success Centre, offering support to students who are struggling and providing lunch and snacks to students who are hungry. We have a team of professionals here to assist your student with any aspect of their school career. I am proud to work alongside them.
We have a full slate of extracurricular activities started. Please encourage your child to participate in a club, an athletic team, or the fine arts – whatever may help them positively connect to our school culture. Studies show that students who are involved in extracurricular activities in their high schools have better attendance, higher grades and have a more positive experience over their high school careers. If your student is not aware of the extracurricular options offered at Bowness, please have them speak to their homeroom teacher or any staff member. As Thanksgiving approaches, I would like to wish you all a wonderful long weekend. I have much to be thankful for and working at Bowness High School is high on that list.
Sincerely,
Jana Macdonald Proud Principal BH
