    Principal's Message

    Our Learning Community

I am very encouraged by the great ‘team’ of staff, students, and parents we have in our learning and community at Brentwood School. On that note, it is my pleasure to welcome a new member to the Brentwood team - Mrs. Karina Pimentel Coelho, our new Admin Secretary in the front office. “Mrs. K.,” as she likes to be called, comes with a wealth of office administrative experience from Woodman Jr. High School. I am very happy to say that she has stepped into the role with great success and much enthusiasm. It is a pleasure to have her on board!
I would also like to acknowledge and thank Mrs. Agnes Petelski, our former admin secretary of 12 years, for her hard work and deep dedication to keeping this school running. We wish her well on her retirement and the best of luck in her future endeavours.
In an effort to keep this teamwork of great learning and community spirit alive, I wish to draw your attention to the following items:
Kindergarten Registration is now complete and all successful applicants in the lottery have been informed of their entrance opportunities. It is imperative that your acceptance into the program is confirmed in writing within the 10-day window provided. Failure to confirm within this window will result in a forfeit of the opportunity for your child to attend the TLC program at Brentwood, and will result in the placement going to the next person on the waiting list. Please note registrants for other grades on waiting lists will be contacted after the spring break to the beginning of September should there be placement opportunities in Grades 1-5. Please DO NOT call the office - we will call you should the opportunity arise.
A polite reminder that parents who are planning extended absences with their children beyond 15 school days are required to meet in person with school administration and their child’s teacher prior to departure. The premise will be to discuss your child’s learning needs while committing to a learning plan (an additional form to be signed along with the previously form used). During this meeting, more detailed information will be reviewed and discussed to clarify important factors and possible implications of the absence.
Choosing convenience over safety when picking up and dropping off students is an ongoing concern. As referenced in another section of this newsletter, parking in appropriate locations (hug and go on the south side for example) requires due diligence so no one gets into an accident, or worse, injured. That means using the areas ‘safely’ while ‘obeying the traffic laws’ that go hand in hand with safety (not making illegal u-turns in the middle of the street or walking through the parking lot instead of using the walk way). Please help keep your children out of harm’s way!
Ongoing communication and connections about your child and their learning with his or her teacher is essential to overall success for children. Please be sure to review the information presented in your child’s report card and all documentation explaining how achievement was assessed. Moreover, please make every effort to attend the upcoming session of conferences in March which will be student led/involved. This is a time when students get to ‘strut their stuff’ if you will and demonstrate their learning in meaningful ways. It is also a wonderful opportunity for parents to probe their child’s learning in more depth. I know you won’t want to miss it!
    Mr. Michayluk
