Principal's Message

February/March 2020

I'm always very excited by the great learning and community spirit that lives at Brentwood School.  Not a day has gone by without me experiencing something new and exciting about this great place.  This same sentiment was shared by our Area 1 Director, Ms. Christine Davies, who recently visited our school.   During a morning visit, she took the opportunity to visit with 3 students from various classrooms to see the ‘learning in action’ while questioning students and staff about their experiences as members of this community.  Her parting comments were – “What great learning is taking place at your school.  Your school development plan is alive and well.”  I could not agree more.  Bravo Brentwood – you are a true testament to a great school!
In an effort to keep this positive energy, great learning, and community spirit alive, I wish to draw your attention to the following items:
Choosing convenience over safety when picking up and dropping off students should take priority.  As referenced in another section of this newsletter, parking in appropriate locations (hug and go on the south side for example) requires due diligence so no one gets into an accident, or worse, injured.  That means using the areas ‘safely’ while ‘obeying the traffic laws’ that go hand in hand with safety (not making illegal u-turns in the middle of the street or walking through the parking lot instead of using the walk way).  Please help keep our students, your children, out of harm’s way!
Ongoing communication and connections about your child and their learning with his or her teacher is essential to overall success for children.  Please be sure to review the information presented in your child’s report card recently sent home and all documentation explaining how achievement is now assessed.  Moreover, please make every effort to attend the upcoming session of conferences in March which will be student led/involved.  This is a time when students get to ‘strut their stuff’ if you will and demonstrate their learning in meaningful ways.  It is also a wonderful opportunity for parents to probe their child’s learning in more depth.  I know you won’t want to miss it!
We will have an opportunity to gather as a school community with our annual Family Fun Night scheduled for the evening of March 6.  This year, our Parent Council and Fund Raising Society are focussed on bringing us together in an evening of fun and entertainment, as well as share a fund raising campaign to finish turning our library into a true learning commons.  Come one – come all to enjoy a night with your family and find on how you can support creating another special learning environment for your children!
We are excited to once again have five Grade 5 students entering the Calgary Science Fair in April.  We will keep you posted on their successes when the time comes for judging and awards.  Bravo Grade 5!
Thanks to the support of our Fund Raising society, and the work of our teacher members of our artist residency committee, we will be hosting part two of our Artist in Residence program in the second half of April beginning of May for Grades K, 1, and 2.  More information regarding presentations and performances will be sent home closer to residency dates.
Mr. Michayluk
