Principal's Message

Oct. 2018

Dear Parents & Guardians,
The first month of school was busy and productive. We extend our sincere appreciation and gratitude to the entire school community for making our September successful. It was a pleasure welcoming parents to our autumn conferences and having an opportunity to begin dialoguing about student learning for the year ahead.
Part of our ongoing work is to cultivate character in our students. Within the CBE, it is expected that each student demonstrate good character. To support this CBE Result, we work to ensure that each student will possess the strength of character to do what is right and act morally with wisdom. Character Day, on September 26, provided an opportunity to celebrate the positive character traits exhibited by our students at Briar Hill School. Conversations at our school focused on what it means to show strength of character inside and outside of our school. This provided a nice foundation for conversations about Orange Shirt Day as well as the Terry Fox Run.
Orange Shirt Day is a national movement that recognizes the experiences of survivors of residential schools, honours them, and shows a collective commitment to ensure that Every Child Matters. It is an opportunity to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come. Every year on Sept. 30, Canadians are asked to wear orange as a sign of support for this national movement. Because 2018 Orange Shirt Day was this past Sunday, we recognized this day on Monday, October 1. Students were encouraged to wear an orange shirt on Monday as a symbol of solidarity.
Students in Kindergarten to grade 6 also be took part in the annual Terry Fox School Run on October 1. Through our participation in the Terry Fox School Run, we hope to encourage and foster the positive character traits demonstrated by Terry. We want our students to be positive agents of change in our school community and beyond. All monies raised through our Toonies for Terry initiative will be forwarded to The Terry Fox Foundation. Of every dollar raised, 82 cents goes directly to cancer research. We will provide an update once we tally our funds. Thank you in advance for your support.
Over the last couple of weeks your children may have mentioned receiving or giving or a purple heart at school. In an effort to recognize and celebrate acts of kindness and strength in character we have been placing small purple hearts in circulation around the school. All members of our school community can earn a heart for unselfish and caring acts. Each individual is encouraged to then pass their heart along when they see others engaged in honourable and admirable acts. We are proud of how many hearts are already circulating in our building!
Please take moment to read this newsletter and review the attached calendar. This document includes important school information, upcoming events, and key dates.
