Principal's Message

Welcome Back!

I hope that everyone had a wonderful summer and you were able to enjoy special times with family and friends. Our school start-up was smooth and we are pleased to welcome our new and returning families and new and returning staff to Briar Hill for the 2017-18 school year.
School Council: Please note the first School Council meeting will be Tuesday, Sept. 12 following the Welcome Back Barbeque. The BBQ is from 5:00-6:30 in the compound area and the school council meeting will follow starting at 6:45. I encourage all parents to attend the School Council meetings typically held on the second Tuesday/Wednesday of each month as you play an integral role in your child’s education. Please remember to sign up to the RSS feed to receive information about School Council meetings and upcoming events they sponsor such as the Halloween Hey Day and Family Dance.
Fall Orientation: Our “Meet the Teacher” /classroom orientation night is scheduled Thursday, Sept. 21 from 6:45-8:00 PM.. The information session will be held in the classroom and this is an opportunity to learn about the upcoming school year. We will start the evening in the gym with introductions and general information and parents will then move to the classroom. The sessions will be approximately 25 minutes and will be offered twice (7:00-7:25 and 7:30-7:55). Each team will have printed information available and if you are unable to attend, the information will be sent home. Sept. 22 is an opportunity for parents to meet with teachers to discuss their child(ren)’s learning if you wish. It is open to all parents and if you were unable to attend on Sept. 22 and wish to meet with the teacher(s), please contact him/her directly to book an alternative meeting time.
Safety and Security: All doors will be locked and will remain locked once the students have arrived for class at 08:40. To enter the school you must press the buzzer for the door to be unlocked. Children arriving late must enter through the front doors; otherwise students are expected to enter and exit through their own doors on the south side of the school.
Thank you for your help in keeping the “no parking” zone in front of the school free and clear for buses/taxis to drop off and pick up students. The area further south along the school fence is available for parents to drop off and pick up which alleviates the congestion during busy times of the day. Please refrain from making a “U” turn in front of the school as this is illegal and impacts the safety of our students and families.
Welcomes and Goodbyes:
It is my pleasure to welcome several new staff members to the Briar Hill Community.
Mrs. Alison Bates-Church is joining us as the teacher in the Mental Health Class. This program is now housed in the Learning Commons as we grew in size within our general population.
Mrs. Danielle Gerla-Rose is joining us in the grade 2/3 which is housed in room 5.
Ms Robin Halbert is our new Assistant Principal. I invite you to stop by the office to introduce yourself to Robin when you are in the school next.
Unfortunately, this is also a time to say goodbye to a long time employee with both the Calgary Board of Education and in particular our Briar Hill Community. Mrs. Elliott has decided new adventures await her and she will be leaving the school at the end of September. Again, when you are in the school, please stop by the office to say your good byes.
Canada 150: For families who participated in our Canada 150 challenge to use the City Pathways over the summer and to log 150 kms biking, walking, roller blading, etc., please remember to send in pictures starting next week. A caption or an explanation of the activity/day would be great as well as we will be posting these on the bulletin board inside the front door.
Again, welcome back and we are looking forward to an exciting year of learning and teaching. Thank you for continuing to support your child’s education and Briar Hill School.
Mrs. Loewen, Principal
