Principal's Message

Thank you so much for making this another successful year for our students and staff

Thank you so much for making this another successful year for our students and staff at Cecil Swanson. As teachers and students wind down for another school year, I am amazed at the learning opportunities that our students have experienced over the past nine months. The support of School Council and the support from many of you who have volunteered, have given our children experiences that they will never forget.
Our school community celebrated many very successful evening events this year including our Festival of Festivals, Family Movie Nights, Family Fun Night and Sporting events such as Cross-Country, Basketball and Soccer . Thank you to all the families that attended these evenings and celebrated your child’s time at school. I would also like to thank the school council for all of their work on these and other school events. It is a critical part of our community and I invite you to come out and join this group of hardworking, dedicated parents at our last meeting on Tuesday June 4, 2019 at 5:30 PM.
Our Grade 6 students are getting excitced about finishing up their final month with us. We will be having a special assembly on June 26 at 10:00 AM for us to say good-bye to them and any staff that may be leaving us. Please join us at this special assembly.
In June, teachers will begin to prepare class lists for next year. Our classroom placement process is very thoughtful, and staff members consider many factors before using their professional judgement to build classrooms that best meet student needs. To foster quality teaching and learning environments, we create classrooms with: A heterogeneous mix of students (achievement, citizenship and personal development), gender balance, a balance of children requiring additional support (i.e. special learning needs, English Language Learners, etc.) and positive social relationships for each child.
Occasionally, parents wish to provide additional information to us to consider during our placement process. If you have information that you believe is crucial to the learning needs of your child, I ask that you provide this information to myself, Mr. Sealy, in writing, by June 7, 2019. Class placements will not always change as a result of this information, but they will always reflect our sincere interest in creating the best learning environment for all students.
As the weather gets warmer, we sometimes see students who are dressed more for the beach than for school. Please remember that students are expected to dress modestly (no short shorts, extra short skirts, bare tummies or tops that do not cover the shoulders). Students still require proper foot wear for physical education. If your child is inappropriately dressed, we may phone you to bring other clothes or we may provide a shirt to cover up.
We can’t thank you enough for your continued support and good will. We feel very fortunate to work with parents who are so deeply committed to supporting their children’s learning. Bouquets to you for modeling respect, responsibility, safety and kindness to our children.
On that note, I want to thank you so much for allowing me to work with your great children for over 9 years. I have formally decided that it is time for me to retire from the Calgary Board of Education and of course, my second home Cecil Swanson School. I have had many excellent memories from this excellent school. I have enjoyed working with you to see how we could best meet the needs of your children. My last day will be on Wednesday June 26. I am hoping to give your new principal some time to settle in and prepare for Swanson’s next journey. I wish you all the best and I hope that you will continue to support your school community as you have for the nine great years that I have spent here. I need you to know that your excellent work at home, with your children, has not gone unnoticed. Our belief is that we need to continue to work together to guide your child in the right direction. Together we can help our children experience Success and help them develop into positive contributing citizens in our community.
As we wind down to the end of June, we hope you and your family will have the opportunity to enjoy some lovely evenings together and we wish you all a safe and happy summer. The first day of school will be Tuesday, September 3, 2019.
Sincerely,
Victor Sealy, Principal
