Principal's Message

February 2018

Winter is still here and February has been known to be a very cold month. We are encouraging students on a daily basis to wear their coats, hats, mitts and boots. It is important that the students dress warmly, as they will be expected to be outside until the entry bells ring (8:10 AM and 12:48 PM). We will post signs for a “Blue Dot Day” when the temperature is below -20 with the wind chill and students may come into the school, waiting in the entrance ways until the bell rings.
As an annual check-up on the education system, the Accountability Pillar provides an opportunity for Alberta Education and school authorities to ensure that we are equipping students for success. The Accountability Pillar uses a set of 16 indicators consisting of surveys for students, parents and teachers on various aspects of quality; student outcomes such as dropout and high school completion rates; and provincial assessments of student learning. From January 24 to the 23rd of February, Alberta Education will be conducting the annual Accountability Pillar Survey. In January, Grade 4 parents will receive a survey from Alberta Education. (PLEASE mail back your Survey). In the first week of February, students in grades 4 and all teachers will be completing their surveys online at school. All surveys are anonymous and ask questions about experiences with the school. In addition to English and French, the parent survey is available in Chinese, Punjabi, Arabic, Blackfoot, Cree, Korean, Spanish and Tagalog. Please support your school by answering the questions and mailing back the survey. We have placed information from our School Nurse, Mrs. Nicole Chen on our web-site edition of our Newsletter. Mrs. Chen is an excellent resource for Health and Medical concerns. She can be contacted at the Village Square Community Heath Centre at 403-944-7024 or 403-944-7000.
Cell phones, iPods and laptops, social networking sites and instant messaging! How much do you know about how your child is accessing these tools? How ‘Web Aware’ is your family? This is the first generation to have the Internet as a regular part of their daily lives. As a community, we are working to promote responsible and ethical use of the digital tools we use. Continue the conversations at home about being Web Aware. We will also continue our classroom meetings with our students to talk about Responsible Digital Citizenship.
Thank you to all our parents, grandparents and guardians who are helping our grade 4, 5 or 6 children in completing their Science Projects for the Science Fair which will be held on Feb. 8 during the day for students and evening from 5:30 to 7 for parents. Being part of this great activity is one more way our children learn how to be inquisitive in a positive way and also learn how to be critical thinkers and problem-solvers. A big thank you to Mrs. Olfert and her crew of supporters (Ms. Peller, Ms. Peltier, Ms. Boni, Mrs. E. Harper, Mrs. C. Harper, Mrs. Bedard, Mrs. Belan , Mr. Barteski, Mrs. Skubovius, Mr. J. Lam and Ms. Vuong) for creating an amazing learning opportunity for our students.
Sincerely
Mr. Victor Sealy, Principal
