March 2018 Update

Excerpted from our March Newsletter.
School Development Plan: Problem Solving
As we reach the halfway point in the year we continue to focus our professional development on building our collective understanding of problem solving within math tasks. Teachers are designing tasks and referring to a Task Analysis Guide to ensure that math tasks offer a level of complexity that challenges all learners within their class. Some of our Friday afternoon sessions involve teachers sharing student work samples, providing feedback to one another on how to improve a task, informing instructional next steps or calibrating with colleagues to ensure assessment practices across grades are consistent. I feel privileged to work alongside teachers dedicated to their professional growth.
French Week – Un gros succès!
La semaine de la francophonie was hugely successful this year. Thank you to the committee of teachers led by Mme Corine and Mme Gina as well as our supportive parents and coordinator: Melissa Bourne. Students really enjoyed experiencing French cultural activities and being greeted by Bonhomme Carnaval! Student Voice has provided their feedback and more suggestions for next year!
Cheque Writing Campaign
School Council’s annual cheque campaign will be held from March 5-23. In the past, this event helped raise funds dedicated to student enhancements, artist in residence, presentations, etc. We are fortunate to have a dynamic learning community that values the campaign and helps us reach our goals, benefitting student learning!
Student-Led Conferences
At the upcoming student-led conferences, parents can expect to see work samples showing evidence of their child’s learning in relation to curricular outcomes from the Alberta Program of Studies. In addition, students will be asked to share their goals, highlight accomplishments and explain the next steps in their learning.
Parents play a key role during the conferences. During student-led conferences you are encouraged to let your child take the lead, listen attentively and ask questions to promote thinking. As you have conversations with your child about their learning, consider asking: What did you learn? Why does it matter? How did you learn it? What questions do you still have? What would you do differently if you were to do this task again?
Please keep in mind, a lot goes into preparing these conferences and missing them makes it difficult to recreate the experience. Thank you, in advance for engaging in this special experience with your child.
