Principal's Message

November 2018 Principal's Message

Dear Citadel Park School Families,
The month of November brings colder weather, our Remembrance Day Assembly, our Scholastic Book Fair and our November 22/ 23 School Conferences. We are most excited about starting November with our Citadel Park School Mobile Escape Residency.  Our grade 2, 3, & 4 students will be involved in this design challenge from November 2-9, 2018. The Mobile Escape team will then be back from November 26- 30 to work with our Kindergarten and Grade 1 students. A Mobile Escape Room Residency is an ambitious undertaking where students endeavour to complete their very own escape rooms inside the school. Here’s how it works:
PHASE 1: ACCLIMATION & INTRODUCTION
The vision is cast for the days ahead. Students engage Mobile Escape’s challenges as well as a maker space. This looks very similar to an in-class field trip. It helps level the playing field, giving everyone an escape room experience, as well as a chance to make puzzles, riddles and codes of their own.
PHASE 2: PLANNING & BLUEPRINTING
Students work together in groups to imagine what their own escape room might look like. Parameters often include: a story or theme, physical constraints, an inventory list, as well as lock and clue types. After creating a coherent blueprint, ideas are consolidated into a master escape room plan. At Citadel Park School, various classes will work collaboratively throughout the day to create two large escape rooms in our Gathering Space.
PHASE 3: CONSTRUCTION & ITERATION
Next, our students will work with the residency leaders to build the escape rooms! A complete escape room requires a variety of distinct but related disciplines. Students select how they can best contribute to the completion of the room – music team, prop team, multimedia team, puzzle team, etc. Problem solving, teamwork, collaboration and cooperation are emphasized in this phase as students work together with their various gifting. This will be a very busy time of creation and building with cardboard, tape, paint and other materials.
PHASE 4: THE SHOWCASE
During this final stage, loose ends are wrapped up. The master clue sheet is consolidated. The rooms are tested for difficulty level. Students are assigned to different time slots when they are able to host their own escape rooms. And finally it is time to showcase their work to other students, siblings, parents, and the school community.
Our Grade 2, 3 & 4 students will showcase their work from 1:20 – 2:20 on Friday, November 9, 2018 in our school’s Gathering Space. If your child is a bus rider and you are planning to attend, please arrive at the school by 1:20. If parents are not here by this time, students will be sent home on the bus. We will have parents communicate their attendance in the student Learning Logs closer to the Showcase date.
We look forward to this experience, provided through funds raised by our Parent Association’s last casino. We are very thankful for this support as it allows both students and staff to be involved in a design and building related residency that aligns with the work we are doing in our Learning Commons and classrooms this year. Please follow our school Twitter account for updates throughout the residency.
