Principal's Message

As we head into the final stretch of the school year and the weather continues to improve, we have to constantly remind ourselves that there are still three months of school left, and busy months they are! The staff continues to provide many exciting opportunities for students to enrich their school experience through events such as clubs, class trips and activities. Our focus continues to be on student engagement and creating tasks and projects that provide opportunities for our students to communicate and collaborate, be creative, solve problems, and think critically.
The students and staff at Citadel Park School have continued to develop their skills in the area of technology. At school our students have access to desk top computers, iPads, laptops and Smartboard technology. We have recently purchased 25 laptop computers thanks to the support of our Parent Society.  With the wide variety of programs and accessibility features students are able to learn and present their learning in multiple ways. We are also discussing digital citizenship with students and the importance of their digital footprint. We need to ensure that they have the social skills that are necessary in the world of technology as well. We encourage parents to supervise and monitor the online use of students while at home and we will continue to monitor it at school.
During the months of May and June, Citadel Park School staff will be creating class lists for next year’s Grade 1 and 3 classrooms.  Students currently in grade one and three will continue to have the same teacher for Grades 2 and 4 as we continue the practice of teachers looping with their students.  The exception to this is if the teacher is identified for layoff, or transfers to another school, or retires.  If a teacher does not continue with her/his students to the next year, students currently in Grades 1 and 3 will still remain in the same class with their current class mates.  Class list creation is an involved process that requires several meetings and thoughtful deliberations about student placement in classrooms.  A variety of factors are considered so that classes are well balanced to meet the needs of all of our students.  If there is information about your child that would be useful to us in making the best placement decision, please communicate with your child’s teacher. 
It is also at this time of year that we receive parent requests for teachers.  In the past we have received very few requests as most parents rely on us to place their child in a classroom.  However, we do understand that in some circumstances, a parent may make a request for a particular teacher. We ask that any requests by parents for a classroom placement for their child need to be submitted to the office in writing to the attention of the Principal. Teacher requests must have an educational reason stated in the letter.  Thank you for appreciating the complexities of creating class groupings. A parent request may not be honoured if it creates an imbalance of student needs in our classrooms. Requests for classroom placements will not be considered after Monday, June 4.
We would once again like to remind our Citadel Park families about our concerns about traffic, parking and street crossing. Please be advised that there is no parking or waiting for student in the teacher parking lot or on the grass facing the tennis courts. We realize parking is at a premium and with the weather warming up, please consider walking to and from school to help alleviate this issue.
