Principal's Message

June 2019 Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Guardians,
As you may have heard or read in the local media recently, the Calgary Board of Education is facing a 40 million dollar budget deficit for the 2019-2020 school year.   Many schools in the CBE are facing reductions in staffing as a result.  We unfortunately are one of the schools that will be reducing staff for next year.  In the fall, we will be reducing Educational Assistant time by two 30 hour per week positions and one 15 hour per week position.  We will also be reducing teaching time by 1.7 full time equivalents, which will require reducing the current number of classrooms in grades 1 to 4 from 18 to 17 rooms.  Next year we are planning to have four Kindergarten classes, four grade 1 classes, three grade 2 classes, four grade 3 classes and four grade 4 classes.  Our projected class sizes for next year will be as follows:
Kindergarten:  19-20 students per class
Grade 1:          19-20 students per class
Grade2:           23-24 students per class
Grade 3:          21-22 students per class
Grade 4:          23-24 students per class
Teaching assignments for next year are yet to be finalized.  We anticipate that most teachers will continue with their current assignments; however some changes will need to be made. When teaching assignments are determined, we will communicate this through email later in June.  We understand that this can be stressful time for families and we will endeavour to communicate these decisions as soon as possible.  We thank you in advance for your patience and understanding as we adjust our staffing budget for next year.  If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Spring is a very busy time of year and it has brought many exciting experiences and events to Citadel Park School. May included a full calendar of events for both our staff and students. After weeks of rehearsal, the Kindergarten students and the students in grades 3 and 4 put on very successful spring concerts showcasing our music program.  The month of May also included our Global Day of Design, which involved the entire school with students creating numerous card building and design-based projects. Field trips that occurred this month included the Grade 2 trip to Ralph Klein Park and Grade 4 trip to the Shepard Landfill.  June will also be a busy month at Citadel Park School with various other field trips, celebrations of learning and school-wide events.
On June 7 we will be hosting our annual Volunteer Appreciation coffee party in honor of our wonderful volunteers who give of their time to support and enhance the educational experiences for both our students and staff at Citadel Park School.  Coffee and baked goods will be served along with entertainment provided by some of our Kindergarten, Grade One and Two students.  As the end of June approaches, we look forward to our traditional Sports Day planned for Friday, June 21 and our Year End Grade 4 Farewell Assembly scheduled for Wednesday, June 26th at 11:00 am. We welcome parent volunteers to assist with our Sports Day stations. Please go to the following link to sign-up:   https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0e4aaca629a5f58-sports2
If you have any further questions please contact Mrs. Harvey. We also invite our grade 4 families to join us for our Farewell Assembly.
Our final School Council Annual General Meeting will be on Tuesday, June 11 at 7:00 p.m. in the Learning Commons. All parents are welcome to attend.
Regards,
Todd Faunt
