March 2019 - Principal's Message

February was “Friendship” month at Citadel Park School. We focused on acts of kindness by filling each other’s buckets.  During our morning announcements, grade four students from our leadership club read the story “Have You Filled a Bucket Today,” by Carol McCloud.  Each morning, the students read a part of the story and then gave suggestions on ways we can fill someone’s bucket at Citadel Park.  To fill someone’s’ bucket, a student could ask a classmate to play at recess, help them find a lost glove, give a compliment, smile or anything that would brighten classmates day.  Besides filling buckets, the students have also been learning a friendship dance that we will all be performing at our March 4th Friendship Assembly.

Decidedly Jazz Dance studio was in our school for the last week in February teaching our students some of the basic moves in jazz dancing.  The students have combined the moves they have learned all week into a friendship dance that will be performed on mass at our Friendship Assembly on March 4th.  This dance will continue to be performed at future assemblies as a way to remind our school community about the importance of friendship.  We would like to thank the Citadel Park Parent Association and School Council for the funds and support of this project.

March will also be a busy month at Citadel Park School.  On March 5, Evergreen Theatre will be in our school performing a very creative version of the “Three Little Pigs” that relates to our science curriculum in designing and building structures.  Also this month, our grade three students will be going to the Bow Habitat Station.  Currently our grade 3 classes have been studying animal life cycles by observing trout in a classroom.  For the past few years, grade 3 students at Citadel Park School raise trout from an egg to a fry at school for release back into designated waterways in Alberta.  The eggs are provided to the school from the Bow Habitat Station as part of the FinS (Fish in Schools) program.  It is a fun and authentic experience for our students as they see our fish grow and learn how fish stocks are managed in Alberta.

School Conferences are at the end of the month just before spring break.  Please watch for an email in the upcoming weeks on how to sign up for conferences.  Conferences will take place on March 21 in the evening and during the morning of March 22.

Finally, Spring Break begins on March 25 and students return to school on April 1.  I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable Spring Break!
