Principal's Message

Dec. 2017/Jan. 2018

“The purpose of a storyteller is not to tell you how to think, but to give you questions to think upon.” ― Brandon Sanderson
Thank you to the many families who attended our storytelling celebrations. Our work with storyteller Jeff Stockton continues to resonate through the school as students are moving on to writing their stories, telling stories in Spanish or learning more about stories and legends from different cultures. Also on the theme of stories, our community came together again last week to watch the story of The Grinch, courtesy of the Collingwood Parent Association. Voluntary donations were taken at this family movie night; over $600 was raised for Change for Children and their work supporting schools in Nicaragua. Thank you for your generosity.
School Development Plan
Every year, each school in the Calgary Board of Education establishes a School Development Plan which outlines an area of focus and a set of strategies to reach that goal. The School Development Plan is summarized in a Theory of Action. Our 2017-18 Theory of Action states: “If teachers use high impact strategies and common assessments for authentic Spanish and Math tasks, then students will demonstrate improved ability to communicate understanding in Spanish and Math.” This is a continuation of our work from last year. Collingwood School is part of the CBE literacy strategy and we are looking at teaching strategies that will have the greatest impact on student learning. We have added a focus on communicating understanding in math this year because of our school data and parent input. While our School Development Plan will measure and track student progress in relation to Spanish oral language development, our school will continue to strive for excellence in all dimensions of academic and social learning for each student each day.
Staffing Updates
We are pleased to welcome teacher Sra. Rosemary Hamilton to our school. Sra. Hamilton will be working in all of our grade 1-5 classrooms providing additional support for students and teachers. Her position was made possible thanks to the Alberta Government’s “Classroom Improvement Fund.” Sra. Hamilton is an experienced teacher who has worked and lived in Spain and taught in International Schools all over the world. We would also like to wish our education assistant Sra. Corti well as she moves on to a position at Eugene Coste School.
Diabetes Canada
Families are invited to bring in donations of used clothing to the school to support the work of Diabetes Canada. Type I and Type 2 diabetes are rapidly growing, chronic medical conditions expected to affect over 10% of Canadians by 2020. All clothing donations will go to support the educational and research work of Diabetes Canada. It is a powerful and important lesson for students at a young age to learn about kindness and generosity and see that our collective efforts can make a difference.
Student Learning Assessments (SLA’s)
All Grade 3 students in Alberta complete a series of Student Learning Assessments (SLA’s) in English literacy and math at the beginning of the school year. The SLA’s are created each year by Alberta Education and are still in a pilot phase. They have evolved greatly over the past three years and are continuing to be refined and improved. The SLA’s are intended to be used by teachers as a formative assessment tool to help teachers plan for instruction and meet student needs. In this way, the SLA’s are different from the Provincial Achievement tests (PAT) which Grade 3 students used to write.
The PAT’s were a summative assessment tool designed to help the province improve the school system as a whole. Because the SLA’s are still in a pilot phase, the overall results are not distributed publically, however teachers will share individual results with Grade 3 parents to inform them what are the next right steps in that child’s learning. We are working as a team at Escuela Collingwood to address those aspects of literacy and numeracy that proved challenging for some of our students.
Parent Survey
Thank you to the many parents and guardians who completed our online survey about school priorities. There was a total of 119 responses from parents and guardians of students in Kindergarten through Grade 5. The responses were overwhelmingly positive about the performance of Collingwood staff and the experiences students are having at Escuela Collingwood.
As a school we are always striving for ways that we can improve and we are grateful for your input. The top priorities for improvement identified by parents are teaching math, supporting students with academic learning, communicating with parents about student learning and teaching Spanish. We are brainstorming ideas as a school staff as to ways we can improve in all of these areas. We look forward to an ongoing constructive dialogue with our parent community on ways to improve the learning experience for students at Collingwood School.
We understand that with the earlier start times and unpredictable weather in Calgary that it can be a challenge to arrive at school on time every day. However, there are a considerable number of students who are routinely late to school. This tardiness makes it more difficult for the child to be successful at school as teachers often outline the plan for the day and explain tasks first thing in the morning. When children arrive late to class it is disruptive to their learning and that of their classmates. Being on time is a sign of respect and consideration. Please reinforce this message for your children by dropping them off on time for school.
