Collingwood Weekly Update, October 8 - 12, 2018

Dear Collingwood Families,
Oct 8 Thanksgiving – No School
Support for Students at Collingwood School
In addition to our fabulous classroom teachers we have several additional teachers and support staff who assist with the learning at Collingwood School.
Learning Support Teacher – Sra. Gugliotta is a full time teacher on staff who works to support all of the students and teachers at our school with learning. She works alongside teachers and with small groups of students to provide support with personalization of learning,  literacy, math and Spanish.
Classroom Improvement Teacher – Sra. Hamilton. Funding was provided by the Alberta government to all schools for a teacher dedicated to improving student learning. Sra. Hamilton works half time at Collingwood School to support students and teachers in literacy and math. Her time rotates throughout the school so she will spend a concentrated block working with each grade group.
Music Teacher – Collingwood is fortunate to have a fabulous bilingual music teacher. She teaches music to all of the students and runs a number of musical events thoughout the year include concerts for Remembrance Day, Christmas, Volunteer Tea, Sharing assemblies, Que Pasa musical gala for Spanish bilingual programs at the Jubilee and end of year events.

Notice of Annual General Meeting for Collingwood School Council
Wednesday October 18, 2017  6:30-7:15pm
(followed by regular monthly School Council meeting from 7:15-8:00pm). Babysitting will be provided.
The School Council brings together the school community to discuss the academic, spirit, and extracurricular programs that make Collingwood a special place for current and future students.  The Council meetings are a place to hear from school administration about school initiatives and give input to discuss and direct how resources will be used to deliver programs to students.  The School Council mission is to foster the wellbeing and effectiveness of our School Community in order to enhance student learning in a Spanish/English bilingual setting.  The AGM is an opportunity to adopt new Officers: Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary (term concludes at the end of the AGM); and Executive: Key Communicator, Naturalization Area Coordinator, Volunteer Coordinator, and Spirit Event Coordinator, possible new role Social Media Coordinator.  The roles are described in the attached 2018 AGM Agenda.  Nominations are open for these positions on a yearly basis.  If interested, please submit an expression of interest (for yourself) or nominate another (with their approval) to collingwoodparentcouncil@gmail.com; include the position sought and some brief info about yourself/nominee.  Please submit by October 10, so interested folks have a week to consider who’s running.  There are also some wording revisions proposed to the Council Bylaws (also attached) that will be considered for approval at the AGM.
Author Visit Oct 22 AM
Author Sigmund Brouwer will be doing presentations for our students on the morning of October 22nd. Students will have the opportunity hear some of Sigmund’s stories from their teacher prior to his visit. If you are at the public library please sign out some of his books as the more familiar children are with his stories the more they will take from his visit.
Sharing Assembly – Oct 24, 1:00PM
Throughout the school year we will be having regular sharing assemblies. These are an opportunity for classes to share their learning with the entire community. Classes sign up to share projects they have been working on in the classroom or in the music classroom. The sharing could be songs, dances, poems, artwork, experiments,  skits, etc. Parents are welcome to attend these sharing assemblies. If your child’s class will be performing a note will come home in your tubo or agenda or a message sent via email from your child’s teacher.
Changes to the School Immunization Program
As per the notice from Alberta Health that was sent out previously, there will no longer be vaccinations at schools in Alberta  for grade 5 students. Those vaccinations will now occur at the grade 6 level.
Please direct any parent question or concerns regarding vaccines to our School Nurse:
