    Principal's Message

    October/November

‘If you can dream it, you can do it” - Walt Disney
Our school is alive with dreams and possibilities as students are exploring storytelling with guest artist Jeff Stockton. Students are gaining confidence as they work on storytelling techniques. They will be sharing their stories with family members at storytelling evenings on November 8th and 9th.
    Staffing Updates
We are pleased to welcome Sra. Navarro back to Collingwood School. She was absent due to illness at the beginning of the year and Sr. Bru began the year with the Grade 4 class in Room 17. It is bittersweet to share the news with you that our school Admin Assistant Jane Bridgett is retiring. Her last day of work is September 29th. She has been a tremendous support to the students, families and staff at Escuela Collingwood. We are certain that families join us in wishing Jane well in her retirement.
    Classroom Improvement Funding
All schools are receiving additional funding from the Provincial Government as part of a Classroom Improvement Initiative. This funding has not yet been released to schools. We will inform the community when we know how this funding will support our school.
    Parent input into school direction
We are always seeking ways to improve as a school and we value parent input and suggestions for improvement. We are inviting parents to complete the short survey at the following link to give on your feedback on school priorities for the 2017-18 school year. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/Collingwood_School_Performance

A reminder to parents who have not yet gone online to give permission for the school to send them emails please be sure to subscribe online.
    Terry Fox Run
Thank you to the many families who donated money for cancer research and participated in our annual Terry Fox Run on September 28th
    Wild about Weeding
Thank you to Collingwood parents Ted Bahr and Mari Decker. They have donated their time to lead sessions in our naturalization area teaching all of our students about different species of weeds. The students were then busy with trowels pulling weeds and beautifying our naturalization area.
Partnership with Senator Patrick Burns School
Leadership students in the Spanish bilingual program at Senator Patrick Burns School will be coming to Collingwood School over the lunch hour during the month of October to lead touch football games in Spanish with our Grade 5 students.
    Standing Desks and Ball Chairs
The school has recently purchased Standing desks and Ball chairs for all classes. These items may be used by all students if they find that it is helpful to move to learn.
    Robotics Kits
The school has recently purchased some robotics kits for students to explore programming and coding.
    Sharing Assemblies
Our school will be holding regular sharing assemblies for students to share the work that is happening in their classes. Parents are welcome to attend these assemblies.
    Skype
Several classes will be exploring using Skype to communicate with a school in Mexico. This is a great opportunity for our students to practice their Spanish and connect with children in another part of the world. Our students can practice their Spanish while the partner students can practice their English. We would love to expand this program to include all classes. If families have contacts with interested schools in Latin America, they are asked to contact their child’s teacher to set up new exchanges.
    Family Picnic and Dance
We are grateful to the Parent Association for their financial support for our welcome back picnic and dance with Banda Brava. The event was very well attended and families had a great time despite the inclement weather.
    Cien Estrellas
To encourage students to use their oral Spanish skills the school has a program we call Cien Estrellas, “One Hundred Stars”. Every day a few teachers or support staff give a gold star to students who they feel are making an exceptional effort to speak in Spanish. The office or school admin call parents to let them know of the great job their children are doing speaking Spanish at school. Every few weeks a group of 10 students meets with the principal or assistant principal and they are rewarded for their efforts. Rewards could be making announcements over the PA in Spanish, preparing material to be broadcast on our school TV or even a quesadilla fiesta.
    New Website
Parents may have noticed that there is a new look to the Escuela Collingwood School website. All CBE websites are being updated. We welcome your feedback about our new “look”.
    Little Free Library
Students at Senator Patrick Burns School donated a “Little Free Library” to Escuela Collingwood. It has been installed by the steps leading to the school from the playpark. Students and families are encouraged to take books if they would like and to bring gently used books to replenish the library. The library has been very popular. We can always use books, particularly for our older students.
    Grandparent Program
We look forward to having grandparents come and volunteer at our school. Interested grandparents are asked to contact Sharon Ryan at 403-239-6122. We will also be welcoming a group of seniors from Boardwalk Retirement Community to tell stories and work with our students.
