Principal's Message

Welcome Back!

Dear Parents & Guardians,
Suddenly, it is the end of August and we wonder where the past seven weeks have gone. I hope that you all enjoyed a wonderful summer. A summer filled with family time, BBQs, lawn games, card games, board games, swims in a lake, simply doing nothing and, dare I hope, some reading and math?

At the end of June, I had one-on-one conversations with most staff members of the school. These conversations, coupled with your 'principal survey' feedback, gave me ample food for thought over the summer. While I will go into greater detail about what I read in our first school council meeting in September, I would like to let you know that there is one thing I have clearly heard you all say: We are PROUD to call Colonel Walker School home. The pride you feel was expressed in many different words, but, looking for the one word to summarize the many, PRIDE is what you feel about Colonel Walker.  I am looking forward to meeting all of you in the coming weeks, to get to know you and to start our educational journey together - and to share the same pride you feel already.

Here are some things I believe:

High expectations for all
All students can learn, albeit in different ways
All students have talents; we need to discover what those are
We are all on a learning journey together
All students belong to all of us, not simply to their homeroom teacher
With an "I CAN" attitude, we -staff and students- will go far
Please come to the source (me) if something you have heard seems odd. Rumors are a terrible thing
Many minds make for many good ideas & solutions

My favourite quote is: "There is no success without failure. There is no learning without making mistakes."

As you may have heard, mathematics is my big passion. I would encourage you to start playing cribbage with your grade 2/3 students, as I will be running a cribbage club in the winter. Of course, if your grade 4-6 student knows how to play, I would be delighted in having them support the club as 'cribbage experts', teaching their younger peers. The grade 4/5s as well as the grade 6s will have a math club in April/May in order for us to participate in the Mount Royal math challenge.

Please stop by and say hello!

Warm regards,Meike Thomsen
