Even though most of our schools offer a regular program, no two are quite the same. All schools teach according to Alberta Education’s mandated curriculum, however a school’s focus, optional courses and school activities are as unique as every school.​​​

  • Staff is trained in using Reading Power and Writing Power, a program developed by a Canadian teacher to support the teaching of reading and writing.
  • Student leadership opportunities: School Patrols, Social Action Club, Breakfast Club
  • Daily high intensity physical activity programs: Daily Physical Education and Spark
  • Choir for Division I & II
  • Breakfast Program
  • Saturplay – family breakfast and cooperative games
  • Hockey Program – leadership opportunity and on ice experience for Gr 5 and 6 students

Administrative Regulation 3066 - Homework

The assignment of formal exercises for completion is the prerogative of the teacher, but encouragement shall be given to pupils (and parents) to set aside some regular time each evening for home study.

Division I: The motivation which comes from parental interest in children’s school work can be valuable to a child. Parents and teachers should encourage children to read from books suggested by the teacher. Participation in the home reading program is an essential part of student reading growth.

Division II: Formal assignments or projects may be given at the discretion of the teacher but in general, assignments should be of the reading or study type. Parents should be made aware of the teacher’s general requirement with respect to home study and the Board’s expectations, but no school requirement should exceed 20 minutes per evening in length.

Role of the Student

  • ask teacher for clarification or assistance if needed
  • take home materials and return completed work

Role of the Teacher

  • assign homework when beneficial
  • give adequate directions

Role of the Parent

  • provide a home environment that facilitates home study
  • offer assistance/encouragement when needed

​Middle Years at the CBE

Middle years learning refers to education offered to students between the ages of 10-15. These years are critical in keeping our students on the path to high school completion and their career futures. Keys for student success include: participating in hands-on, purposeful and relevant learning; creating positive relationships with peers, teachers and other adults; and being actively involved in the community and feeling supported by family, businesses and other organizations that surround them.

​Exploring Career Choices

For Grades 5 to 9 at the CBE, we offer Career & Technology Foundations (CTF). This is an inquiry-based, hands-on program that focuses on essential skills common to occupational areas, and our students personalize their learning based on their interests and passions.​​​
