Students Celebrate Literacy at Douglas Harkness School

Dates to Remember

Principal's Message

February 2018

Teachers have been working hard over the last few months in Professional Learning Community (PLC) teams. Their work in professional learning communities has been focused on improving student achievement in mathematics and literacy. Teachers collect data and evidence of student work, make decisions about the implementation of strategies and interventions and then evaluate and adjust their approaches to teaching and learning based on what they learn. We are currently in the second cycle of this PLC works. On January 19, teachers presented what they learned during the first cycle of PLC. We are very proud of their commitment and focus to helping our students improve and succeed.
At the end of January, we held a whole school Read Around. Teachers chose some of their favourite books to share with students and during the Read Around, teachers switched classrooms and read to a new class of students. Students (and teachers) really enjoyed the opportunity to work with a new teacher/group of students and share some of their favourite literature. We plan to hold another Read Around in March.
Another way we are promoting literacy at our school is through a Take a Book, Leave a Book shelf in the front hallway across from the office. This shelf was donated to us from Calgary Reads.
Ask your child about DEAR -  Drop Everything And Read time at Douglas Harkness School. When students and staff hear a special song playing, they know it is time to stop what they’re doing and focus on reading quietly to themselves for 10-15 minutes.
We are fortunate to currently have the support of a Mathematics coach. CBE teacher and Mathematics coach, Andrea Westine works a few hours per week at Douglas Harkness School to support teachers in developing strategies and deepening their practice in teaching Mathematics. Currently, Ms. Westine is supporting teaching and learning in Mathematics in grade 5/6 and 3/4. Later in the school year, she will also provide support in grade 1/2.
Due to the extreme weather, we had to cancel our Parent Night with CPS Constable Carter Duchesney who was going to present to parents about online safety for children. We have rescheduled this presentation for Thursday, April 19. Please watch for an information flyer and RSVP to come home to you in early March. We hope parents will choose attend this session to learn more about how to keep their children safe online.
We are very pleased to see students dressed appropriately for the weather. Dressing in layers and wearing warm jackets, snow pants, winter boots, hats and gloves/mittens is very important. If your family needs help to acquire any of these items, please do not hesitate to contact us at the school for support.
