Principal's Message

Welcome to School Year 2019 - 2020

Hello Students and Families. Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year.  We are excited to have you join us for many learning adventures.

Please look at our Back to School page for information that will help to prepare you for the new school year. For our incoming Grade 7 students and all students new to Dr. Gordon Higgins, we will meet you on Tuesday, Sept. 3 at 8:00 am in the gymnasium. We will be together until 12:00 noon, helping you to become familiar with Dr. Gordon Higgins School.  Buses will be operating so be sure to find your bus stop and ride the bus to school.  If you don’t ride to school, make sure you plan to take the bus home so that you know the route. For returning students, we will see you at 8:00 am on Wednesday, Sept. 4  in the gymnasium.  All students will be in classes for the full day starting September 4.

Please plan to join us on Thursday, September 12 at 6:00 pm for our Welcome Night.  We look forward to meeting with students and families.

I would like to take this opportunity to say farewell to Ms. Allard. After enjoying a long career and great relationships with students and families, we wish her a wonderful retirement. We wish the following staff all the best in their new adventures: Mr. Pettit moved to McKenzie Highlands School; Ms. Jenoure is embarking on a new teaching opportunity; Ms. Siemens accepted a learning leader position at Tom Bains School and, Ms. Pierre has become a system specialist. Ms. Martin and Ms. Evangelista are moving on to new opportunities. Thank you all for your dedication, service and impact on our students and their learning over the years, you will be missed.

We are pleased to have our team mostly set for the upcoming school year.  We welcome Ms. Scharfe as our Indigenous Learning Leader, Ms. Niemi in the Paced Learning Program, Mr. Faunt in the Music program, Ms. Keelan in the Humanities and PE department and, Ms. Trautman in our Math/Science department. I, along with our Assistant Principal, Mr. Papp will continue to lead the amazing team of educators here at Dr. Gordon Higgins School. Our grade level learning leaders are Mr. Anderson – Grade 7, Ms. Leslie – Grade 8 and Ms. Inkster – Grade 9. Mr. McNeely will oversee the Humanities department, Ms. Mahal the Math/Science deparment, and Ms. Buchan ELL programming.  If you would like to talk about your child and thier learning, we ask that you first talk to their homeroom teacher.  If you then need to talk to an administrator, please reach out to the grade level learning leader listed above. We all look forward to working with you throughout the 2019 – 2020 school year.

Welcome to Higgins!  It's a great place to learn.

Maureen Hurst, BEd, MA
