Principal's Message

April 2020

Dear Parents & Guardians,
As you are aware, all classes in Alberta schools were cancelled indefinitely due to COVID-19 as of March 15. We miss seeing your children every day and hope that things will return to normal soon!
As suggested by Alberta Health Services in the interest of public health, as well as their own safety most of our staff have been working from home, although a few essential staff continue to work from school including Holly Van Oosten (administrative secretary), Terrie Lay (assistant principal), our new facility operator Agnes Mang, and myself Anne Markovich (principal). We are here to answer your questions, and help you to navigate through this uncertain time. As our teachers and your children move to online learning, we will help you in any way we can Monday to Friday 9:00am to 4pm. If your inquiries arrive in our inbox or voicemail in the evening, we will be sure to get back to you as soon as we can the next school day.
If you do not have access to a computer, please contact your child’s teacher as soon as possible, so they can make arrangements to support your child’s ongoing learning in another way. If your child is accessing online learning, their teacher should have already been in touch with you or your child to help them better understand the online platform they will be using.
Kindergarten students will be using Brightspace D2L and we know you are already familiar with that.
Grade 1 to Grade 4 have already or will be moving to Google Classroom this week. Google Classroom can save time and paper, and allows the teacher to create online classes, post assignments, and communicate with their students quickly and easily. It also allows the teacher to see which students have completed their assignments and they can provide direct, real-time feedback to their students.
If your child is not already enrolled in his/her teacher’s new Google Classroom, please check your email as you would have received an invitation and instructions of how to join. If not, please email Holly at or call her at 403-777-6640 to get signed up. Alberta Education has set out the following guidelines for elementary students:
Kindergarten to Grade 3
Education content will focus on language/literacy and mathematics/numeracy outcomes of provincial curriculum.
Teachers will assign an average of 5 hours of work per student per week and must work with students and parents to deliver these materials.
Grades 4 to 6
Education content will continue to focus on language/literacy and mathematics/numeracy outcomes. There will also be opportunities to incorporate science and social studies outcomes through cross-curricular learning.
Teachers will assign an average of 5 hours of work per student per week and must work with students and parents to deliver these materials.
Some resources available to help parents can be found at
If your child has personal items that are still here at school and you would like to come and get them, or if for any other reason you need to come into the school, please call Holly to make an appointment, as we strive to ensure that we are following social/physical distancing guidelines as set out by AHS.
As things continue to evolve and information may change, please check the CBE web page for the most up to date information on systemic changes to your child’s education during this pandemic
We are so proud of our parents, students and teachers as well as our support staff, as they navigate this new way of teaching and learning! Thank you for your ongoing and continued support and patience!
Stay well and look after yourselves and your families,
Anne Markovich
