Principal's Message

March 2019

Dear Parents & Guardians,
Thank you for your continued support with ensuring your child is properly dressed for the weather. It has been an unusually cold February, and although the weather seems to be improving, we expect that students will come to school fully prepared to be outside for the forecasted low temperatures throughout the school day. If the temperature drops below -20 degrees Celsius (including the wind-chill) then we will keep our students indoors. If the temperature is -19 and warmer, students will go outside to exercise and get some fresh air. As we live so close to the mountains, Calgary weather can be unpredictable, so sending your child suitably dressed helps them to better enjoy this time. If you do not have access to warm winter wear for your family, please contact our office and we will try to connect you with agencies who can provide these items.

Our grade 1 and 2 students just had their music celebration and dazzled us with their talents. Just a reminder, that when there is a special event and formal uniforms are required, it will be posted in the “Dates to Remember” section of our website, so you should always check there if you are unsure. We expect that student uniforms are clean and in good repair, so we ask for your help to check your child’s uniforms (both formal and informal) before sending them to school each day. In the Calgary Board of Education, you have many options of schools to choose for your child. The TLC school uniform is an important part of the Program of Choice that you have selected for your child. We appreciate your commitment to ensuring your child arrives at school daily in the appropriate uniform. Please note that if your child is wearing an undershirt under their uniform, it must be white, and completely covered by the uniform. As stated on the McCarthy Uniform website, “The McCarthy’s team has a proud tradition of offering a Uniform Assistance Program to students who demonstrated financial need. No student at a school officially outfitted by McCarthy’s will go without a uniform due to financial need. Our team pioneered this program, a first of its kind in the world!” Please contact our school office to access this uniform financial assistance program.

We are pleased that our Parent Enhancement Society is willing to support our Artist in Residency. Cathy Beveridge is a children’s author who happens to live in Calgary. Cathy works with students to create a narrative story plan that utilizes problem and solution as its framework. She looks specifically at using emotion to frame a story and engage the reader. Cathy also introduces students to various techniques to write successful beginnings, middles and ends while guarding the shape of the story that engages the reader. Cathy often writes class stories, where she, with the students’ input, creates the beginning and end, while each student writes a page in the middle to create a beautiful classroom book. She was here for a brief stay in October, and is scheduled to come again this spring. She will be working in all classrooms with the teachers and students to hone their writing skills. This residency will be starting April 1st.

In a few weeks, student progress will be reported and celebrated through student-led conferences on Thursday evening. For each curricular area showcased, teachers have prepared information that highlights what parts of the curriculum were being addressed and how the task relates to the student’s report card marks. Seeing your child’s daily work from the classroom gives parents more information into your child's academic functioning at school. This is a time to celebrate your child’s accomplishments and to increase their confidence as a learner, which research tells us is essential for a child to feel comfortable taking risks in learning and to realizing their potential. At parent or teacher request, we will also be booking individual conferences on Friday. If this suits your needs better, please book online through MyCBE account, with your child's teacher on Friday, March 22nd  between 8:00am and 12:45pm.

In summary:
Thursday March 21: student led conferences – parents book online (4 students per 30 minute block)
OR
Friday March 22: 1:1 parent/teacher interviews – parents book one online (15 minute block by parent or teacher request)
Parents choose which option works best for their family.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact us!

Sincerely,
Anne Markovich
Principal
