The Playground Opening
What a beautiful day we had for the Official Opening of our Playground! The sun was shining, the temperature was hot, and the students were excited to perform. We were happy to have many parents able to join us, as well as some invited guests. We were pleased to have Mike Ellis, MLA for Calgary West, John Merrett, Chair of the Playground Committee, Ed Choufi, Chair of the School Council, Brian Underschultz, CBE System Principal for Area 7, Catherine Fradgley, Director of Facility Operations, and Tim Aylesworth, Manager for Park n Play Designs.
The families at Dr. Roberta Bondar School are an incredible group of people! From the very beginning, they were focused on building a playground for their children. A committee was quickly formed and the fundraising and planning started. John Merrett and the committee should be commended for their vision, perseverance, and tenacity of launching this project. Without John’s leadership, and the work of the committee, the timing of this playground would not have happened. In fact, it was almost a year ago when the Government of Alberta granted $250,000 to new schools to build playgrounds and ours went into “lift-off mode”. I believe we were the first school to access the funding and get our Space Station off the ground. Catherine Fradgley, CBE Director of Facilities, was instrumental in helping us access the funding and navigating a process for other schools to follow in our path. She helped us to take the problem of “the hill” and turn it into an opportunity to create this safe playground and plan for a Naturalized Playground in the future. The Park n Play apparatus has allowed us build a playground that is accessible for all students, and allows students to develop physically, socially and cognitively. Playgrounds are important part of the students’ learning environment and the community at large. This playground provides many opportunities for children to grow and develop in creative and positive ways. Parents, we thank you for all of your time, creativity and support to get this project launched.
The Legacy Stars look amazing! What a tribute to the staff and students who opened the school. On behalf of the students, who love their Space Station and Legacy Stars, we thank you!
June continues to a busy month for our school community. The warm sunshine beckons staff and students to come outside and take advantage of the beautiful weather. Therefore, we will try to hold as many Daily Physical Activities outside as possible, and encourage our students, during recesses, to be active in the sunshine with the Space Station and playground equipment. Wonderful as the promise of summer is, we still need to remember, the curriculum is based on a 10-month year. We will need to remain focused on the learning, during class time, to ensure our students have the best educational advantage.
We commend our school community for their continued commitment to the culture of “acknowledging the gifts and talents each child brings to the learning environment, and supporting them in reaching their personal best”. Over the last reporting period, the students set academic goals and have worked hard at meeting them. The staff has set goals for all of their students, and as we move into the final accounting for the year, they will be amassing their assessments and consolidating them for the June report card.
The teaching staff has also set goals for themselves. Each teacher is responsible for developing, implementing and completing a Teacher Professional Growth Plan at the beginning of each school year. These plans are designed to promote continuous growth of professional learning, show a demonstrable relationship to the provincial teaching quality standard, and take into consideration the education plans of the school and the Calgary Board of Education. June is a time when teachers meet with each other to reflect and assess the attainment of our professional goals. We laud their perseverance to continuous professional growth.
Sports Day will be held on Friday, June 22nd and will provide students with an opportunity to get active as they explore various stations. We are most appreciative of the parent support of volunteering. We look forward to a fun filled day of activity.
The staffing process has started, and decisions for next year have not been confirmed. We will update you in a final newsletter at the end of June.
