Principal's Message

October 2017

We have had an excellent first month at Dr. Roberta Bondar School!  Our 407 students are settled, developing new relationships and fully engaged in a plethora of learning activities.  We are continuing to use the process of inquiry to personalize learning for our students.  In the Calgary Board of Education, personalization of learning begins with the students’ engagement in the learning experiences, and the curriculum being anchored in meaningful and authentic tasks.  Assessment will be embedded into the task and we will work with students to ensure they are able to articulate what they know, how they know it, and what they need to do next.  This process will be evident as our students take part in a yearlong inquiry of “How can a problem become an opportunity?”  The beauty of this question is that it will encompass the curriculum across all grades, as well as provide a springboard to conversations and opportunities around the “Results of Citizenship, Personal Development and Character.”
How can a problem of no playground (with the exception of a “tot lot”) become an opportunity?  Thank you to a large number of our very committed parents and CBE staff who took part in the planning, fund-raising, designing, and construction of this wonderful spaced-themed playground.  With that, and a substantial grant from the government, our playground is almost ready!  Imagine, even our students were involved as they presented design ideas to the School Council and the stars embedded in the surfacing are actual student drawings!  The inspection of the playground, and the landscaping should be underway this week.  We will send a message to you to announce when it will be open and how we will ensure a safe and caring initial use.  As I am sure all of you are aware, all 407 students will want to be on it at once!
How can a problem of needing to safely cross a very busy street become an opportunity of student leadership?  Our Grade 5 students have enthusiastically stepped up to become leaders in our school.  School Patrols will be starting on Tuesday, October 3rd.  They will be patrolling the crosswalk just west of the “Hug & Go” on Strathcona Dr.  Please use the Patrols to cross Strathcona Dr., especially when dropping off or picking up students from the north side of Strathcona Dr.  Even though it may be a little less direct, we want to encourage students, and remind families to always cross the street at crosswalks.  As we remain concerned about the crosswalk on the corner of Strathlea Cres./Green and Strathcona Dr., we would ask our school pedestrians to walk a little further down Strathcona Dr. and cross with the Patrols. School Patrollers will be on duty 8:15 – 8:30 (M-F) and 3:10 – 3:20 (M-Th.) 12:15 – 12:25 (F).
How can a problem of fund-raising become an opportunity?  Last week, we had the wonderful opportunity of bringing our community together to support cancer research.  What a great Terry Fox Run, or should I say runs?   Although our run was mid-morning, the afternoon kindergarten ran with their “buddy classes” mid-afternoon.  The day was a success from the perspectives of participation, buddy-bonding, donations, Grade 5 coin-counting, organization, and families attending.  Even the weather cooperated. Thank you to everyone involved!
The Calgary Flames are proud to partner with the Calgary Board of Education again this season to offer its students, staff, and families a discounted ticket to a Flames game, while also fundraising for their school and the CBE. This year there are three CBE Student Nights to choose from… Thursday, November 9th vs. the Detroit Red Wings Saturday, February 17th vs. the Florida Panthers Wednesday, March 21st vs. the Anaheim Ducks CBE Price: $39/ticket For every ticket sold the Calgary Flames will donate $10 back to our school.  Tickets can be purchased at .
How can the problem of not knowing what is going on at the school, and having voice in your child’s education become an opportunity for involvement?  The Dr. Roberta Bondar School Council and Development Association will be holding their Annual General Meeting on Tuesday, October 3, 2017 at 6:45 on the “Launch Pad”.  Please join us!
Please join Laine and Kim for a casual “Coffee with the Principals” on Friday, October 27th at 8:30 am.  We hope you will come, meet us in the Learning Commons for coffee/tea/juice, and an informal opportunity to get to know what is happening in and around our school community.  Please bring your comments, questions, and suggestions for our school to be an even better place.
