Principal's Message

October Principal Message

September has come and gone and the year is off to a great start at G.P. Vanier. One highlight of the past couple of weeks for staff and students is the assemblies hosted by Leo Barbe. Leo is a motivational speaker and engaged with youth focused message to empower the students to take control of their lives by making positive choices in everything they do; especially in terms of who their top 5 friends are.  G.P. Vanier has also started a mental health and wellness focus for one period on Fridays that occurs twice a month. The purpose of this time is to connect to our school development goal in regards to mental health for this year. We are starting with the topic of ‘Digital Citizenship’ with the students at this time.

As you are likely aware, G.P. Vanier has a “no cell phone in class (instructional time)”. To that end, we wanted to inform parents and guardians on the importance of not letting kids sleep with their cell phones or have them in their rooms 1 hour before bed. Teachers have been exploring the on-line resource “Away for the Day”, which has some great information about impact of cell phones in student’s lives at school. There are also excellent resources for parents and trips & tricks of how to respond to the common excuses your teenager will give you regarding their need for 24/7 cell phone access. Here is a link to some of this research for you to explore. (https://www.awayfortheday.org/research).

Noon-hour clubs (Monday & Wednesdays) are starting up in the second week of October and teachers have prepared a short video to advertise their term 1 clubs to students. Please encourage your child to get involved, join a club, as we would like to see 75% of our total student population join a club or sports team this year. Educational research shows that student involvement in school clubs & sports increases attendance as well as well as academic achievement.

A reminder that GP Vanier teachers offer drop in Humanities tutorials on Tuesdays from 12:40-1:04pm in the library and on Thursday’s students can come for Math & Science help. Same time and place.

We look forward to another healthy parental turn out for our October School Council Meeting on Tuesday, October 29th 2019 at 7pm in our library. All parents are welcome and encouraged to attend.
