Principal's Message

May/June 2019

Dear G. W. Skene families,
It’s hard to believe that we are in the last two months of the school year. The year has flown by and what a success it has been! We all love coming to school each day and working with your wonderful children. They are energetic and enthusiastic about their learning and have grown so much this past year. Thank you for all of your support through the year as well, we couldn’t do it without you.
We are hoping that spring is here to stay and are excited for nicer weather. With the melting of the snow we were amazed at the amount of garbage in our school field and along the fence. Thank you to the students, specifically Room 9, who took the time to clean up our school space. They showed generosity through this kind act and we all benefit from this.
April was a very busy month. Grade 5 students attended their last Outdoor School and Grade 3 students participated in swimming lessons. We began our work with our Artist in Residence, Jeff Stockton, around oral story telling. This work continues on for the next few weeks and we are excited to showcase our learning in June.
May and June will continue to be very busy months. The focus remains on teaching and learning and teachers continue their focus on learning intentions each day in the classroom. We have spent much of our professional learning time focusing on our School Development Plan, report card data and learning more about problem-solving in math. Our goal is to have students become more fluent in their math skills and become stronger problem-solvers.
On the morning of May 10, the Grade 2 students from James Short Memorial School will come to G. W. Skene for a tour. This helps promote community and reduce anxiety as the Grade 2 students prepare to move schools next year. They will have the opportunity to meet the Grade 3 teachers, tour our great school and participate in fun activities. Our Open House for Grade 2 families will be on Thursday, May 30 from 3:45 – 4:45. We will have coffee and conversation for the first 20 minutes, followed by a brief presentation and school. All families who have students in Grade 2 at JSM are invited to attend.
We are in the process of planning for next year and the number of teachers and support staff we can have at Skene depend on the number of students we have. If you know your child will not be attending G. W. Skene next year please complete the form that was sent home and return it to your child’s teacher.
Thank you again for all of your support. Please be sure to check out our list of important dates, as there are many upcoming activities. Also, please remember that you are invited to attend our school council meetings, which are held on the 3rd Thursday of each month. The next meeting is on Thursday, May 30 at 5:30 pm at
G. W. Skene School. Please come out to share your thoughts and opinions with us. We love to involve all members of the community.
Kind regards,
Derek Siakaluk, Principal

As you all know, a large focus for us this year was on mindfulness. Each student and staff member at G. W. Skene learned about and practiced mindfulness individually and together. It was an awesome way to learn about our brain and how our brains respond to stress. By practicing strategies for quieting our minds, we become better at self-regulating, increase our capacity for absorbing information, and improve our relationship skills. Please ask your children to share their learning about mindfulness with you. We look forward to continuing this journey next year.
