Principal's Message

Welcome Back to School!

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s):
On behalf of our staff, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2019-2020 school year at H.D. Cartwright School.  As a staff, we have been working to get this year off to a great start. We eagerly anticipate the exciting opportunities for learning, citizenship, friendships and more that we know will present themselves over the course of the next ten months.  I am consistently impressed by the staff here and their obvious commitment to the children we serve.  We are all looking forward to working together with you this year. Go Cougars!
While I know there is a great deal of paperwork that goes home at this time of year, I want to let you know about a few key pieces of information as succinctly as possible:
·         Please welcome Scott Gresham to our staff.  Scott is joining us to teach Construction and Outdoor Education and is excited about the role.
·         We are also pleased to welcome back the following staff who were on temporary or probationary contracts last year: Mr. Palamarchuk, Ms. Petrovic, Ms. Sosnowicz, Mr. McSween, and Mrs. Hamilton.
·         Please carefully review the opening package that has been sent home with your child, ensuring that you sign and follow up with any necessary forms, fees, etc. We ask you to kindly return these to the school by September 6th.
·         Pay special attention to the 2019-2020 calendar, found in the opening package, for important dates and events this year, including parent-teacher conferences, non-instructional days, holidays, et cetera.
·         For student safety, a reminder that students should not be dropped off in the parking lot or in front of the school in the bus zone. The street along the west side of the school field, just around the corner, has ample space for this purpose.
·         Attendance is critical for a positive and successful school experience. Parents, please ensure that your child attends regularly and punctually.
o    If students will be absent, please ensure that the office is informed.  The absence line can be accessed at 403-777-7420 Ext 1.
o    To ensure that we always have an accurate register of who is in the building, all students arriving late or leaving early must sign in/out at the office.
o    Note that not all absences can considered “excused,” even if parents have notified the school. Excused absences need to meet the criteria set in the Education Act. This criteria is not at the school’s discretion.
·      To avoid disruptions to learning for all students, it is important that parents make arrangements and communicate important information with their children prior to the start of the school day.  We will only call a student away from class to take a phone call or message in the case of an emergency and students may only have/use personal electronic devices in class with the teacher’s permission for learning purposes.  Making plans in advance is also helpful in minimizing interruptions for office staff.  Your cooperation is appreciated!
·         In order to stay in the loop with what is happening at our school, please ensure that you “opt in” to receive messages from School Messenger, and that you can access Power School.
·         Our school’s hours are:
            8:20 - 3:07 Mon-Thurs. (Lunch Break 11:59-12:42)
            8:20 – 12:00 Friday
·         We often require volunteers for school events and activities, such as field trips.  If you are at all able to, please complete the volunteer security clearance process through the CBE and Calgary Police Service so that you can help our students. Our office staff would be happy to assist you in doing so.
We are looking forward to working with you this year.  Please feel free to contact the school should you have any questions.
Sincerely yours,

Steven Klukas,  Principal

Over the course of the 2019-20 school year, we will continue to have conversations with students, parents, and staff to learn from their experiences and to seek their input and suggestions for improvement #yycbe

Earlier this afternoon Chief Superintendent Christopher Usih and Dr. Kent Donlevy presented the results of the independent bullying review #yycbe

There are no classes for students on Friday Oct 11 because it is a system-wide non-instructional day. All schools and offices are closed on Monday Oct 14 for Thanksgiving. Have a fun and safe long weekend! #WeAreCBE
