Principal's Message

December 14 Update

Hello HMS Families,
Wow! It was an amazing performance of the Nutcracker Thursday evening. I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of the staff and parents who made the production possible. Ms. De Shane, Ms. Brosh, and Ms. Sims have worked with the students at least once a week after school, for months, in addition to daytime rehearsals in recent weeks. Their dedication, and the dedication of our students, was very evident in the quality and passion of the performance. Thank you also to the many volunteers who secured donated materials and fashioned them into costumes and the incredible backdrop for our students. HMS Parent Association also contributed some funds for the production. All in all, it was a truly unique and memorable experience for everyone, thanks to the efforts of our school community.
Speaking of community, our Families Helping Families campaign is going very well. Our giving tree is full of donations of warm clothing and our book bins are filling up with wonderful children's books. Our Healthy Haultain club challenged the school to collect at least 205 items of food for the food bank in order to declare the last day of school pajama day... We do not yet have a final total, but I am certain we have far surpassed our goal. Thank you for your generosity and for supporting each of these community initiatives. The last day of donations will be Thursday December 20.
On a less festive note, I would like to ask all parents to please choose safety over convenience when it comes to pedestrian safety near our school. With the snow banks along the Drive, it can be a little harder to get around and to find a safe spot to drop off your child. We have had reports of both children and adults stepping out into the road in front of moving traffic. Please take the time to use the crosswalks when coming to and from the school. Our patrols are on duty at 8:05 AM and 3:07 PM and are happy to support you in crossing the road safely.
A few other tips:
- Parking is available in the community centre parking lot for drop off and pick up of students.
- If you park on the street, please attempt to have your children exit the car on the sidewalk side of the car, rather than into the street. We realize the snow banks make this more challenging. If it is not possible, please be very cautious as you and your children exit the vehicle.
-If you are driving, please obey all speed zones and traffic zones and be especially careful near the crosswalk. We had a recent incident where a family was very nearly hit by a vehicle in the crosswalk. When in doubt, please use extra caution, particularly in the mornings when it is still dark out.
Teachers periodically review pedestrian safety with students. We would also appreciate if parents can do the same at home.
Coming Up:
Monday- Friday: We will be having carolling each morning from 8:30-9:00 AM. Families are welcome to join us. Thank you in advance to Mrs. Brosh for organizing this for us!
Monday: Last meeting for Families Helping Families club @ lunch
Wednesday: Report Cards sent home
Thursday: Last day for Kindergarten before the break, Last day for Families Helping Families donations

Have a terrific weekend,
