Principal's Message

December 2018

Our system outcome for our new Mathematics strategy states that each CBE student will participate in active, rigorous mathematics learning to progress and achieve in their learning programs. For our younger students at Hidden Valley, this means building a strong mathematical foundation so students can understand complex mathematical ideas. Teachers work to ensure students participate in a variety of learning activities and use mathematical discussions with and among students to build and solidify concepts. Students slowly begin to make connections between conceptual understandings, problem solving and mental math to develop their mathematical reasoning. As teachers continue to program for student success, our new Math Learning Leader, Julie Johnston, has begun to support teachers in new assessment tools such as Math Running Records and MIPI (Math Intervention Programming Instrument) alongside supporting Math task design that is rich, rigorous, engaging and relevant. In addition, she will support certain students to better understand parts of Math as identified by the homeroom teacher.
Finally, Mrs. Johnston is assisting administration to build and review Math data to inform future year’s actions and strategies communicated out through the School Development Plan.
Thank you parents for coming out to support your child’s learning during Parent-Teacher Conferences. Hopefully you were able to learn where your child is at in his/her learning, what the next best steps for learning are and how your child’s teacher will be supporting in the future. In addition to the interviews in November, please look for your child’s report card going home the last week of school in December before winter break.
We would like to remind parents to please be respectful and follow traffic rules around our school area. We have had several situations whereby parents are parking in the hug and go zone, unloading and/or parking in the staff parking lot or parking on the pedestrian crosswalk and staff and or parents have had to approach the parents to remind them to follow traffic rules. We have brought out more signage and are working closely with our community police officer to help keep everyone safe during peak hours and we thank all those parents who are helping by continuing to follow safe traffic measures.
With the dead of winter fast approaching, we want to remind parents to send their child to school with all the winter gear needed. Winter coats and snow pants are vital and not often forgotten, but just a reminder that other vital items needed include winter boots, mittens and hats as students play outside daily and need all this warm clothing to stay comfortable and warm during the cold months ahead. Thank you to our Parents Care committee for the hot meal on Thursday night of conferences. Your delicious act of kindness was much appreciated.
To celebrate Hidden Valley’s 15th Anniversary, we have brought back an updated original logo which we will be selling moving forward. If you did not get to see it at conferences, the new t-shirts will continue to be on sapphire blue with more sizes to choose from. Order forms were sent home prior to conferences and we will accept orders up to Dec 6, 2018 for a delivery in January.
Have a great December!
