Sept. 2017 | Welcome to the 2017-18 School Year!

Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year! I hope you all had a chance to rest and relax over the summer because the next 10 months will be very busy! If you are new to Highwood School, welcome to a wonderful school with wonderful parents, teachers, and students. Everyone in the Highwood family works hard to ensure that all students enjoy and succeed in learning the language and culture, and to have lots of fun while doing it! By choosing Highwood School, we understand that you are not just choosing a school, you are choosing the value of learning a second language and the joys and struggles that come with it. Whether you’re new or returning to Highwood School, expect this year to be packed full of language learning, rich activities, and fun experiences.

I know that this year comes with a lot of changes to transportation because of your choice of attending an alternative program. Thank you for your flexibility and understanding to the transition to congregated bus stops. I know that this may mean travelling to and from bus stops that are further from your house than in previous years, but I appreciate that you value this program enough to make these accommodations.

We have had a number of changes to the Highwood staff. We welcome Mr. Tony Chan who will be teaching Grade 2 and Grade 3 English and Ms. Irene Ly who will be teaching Grade 4 English. Congratulations to Mrs. Ellahib who had a baby boy over the summer! Robbie Ellahib was born on July 30th at 8.1 lbs. Both mom and baby are doing great! She will be on maternity leave for the entire school year. Ms. Calvert will be covering her maternity leave and teaching Grade 1 English in the afternoons, in addition to her regular position of teaching Kindergarten English in the mornings.

Our school hours are the same this year as last year, and once again there are a number of early dismissal days. Please note these dates on your calendar and remember that students are dismissed at 12:05 after they eat lunch. Once again, you can pick up your children at 11:30 on these days if you do not wish for them to eat lunch at school. Please remember to sign them out in the office first. For kindergarten students, these half days alternate, with some days designated only for AM kindergarten students, and some days designated only for PM kindergarten students. Please see the school calendar for exact dates. For the most up to date calendar, please refer to the monthly one posted on Highwood’s website. (http://schools.cbe.ab.ca/b217/)

I look forward to a jam packed year full of learning and laughter!

Sincerely,

Christine Cheung

Principal, Highwood School
