Stream Overviews

Math -1

Mathematics-1 is intended for those students who want to:

  • Study mathematics or sciences at a university, college, or technical institute and go on to a related career
  • Plan to enter post-secondary programs such as:
    • Engineering
    • Mathematics
    • Sciences
    • Business studies
    • or other programs that require advanced math skills.

The sequence is a co-requisite for Mathematics 31 and may be required for post-secondary calculus courses.

Math -2

Mathematics-2 is intended for those students who want to:

  • Attend a university, college, or technical institute after high school, but do not need calculus skills.
  • It is for students wishing to study at the post-secondary level in diverse fields, including:
    • Arts programs
    • Civil engineering technology
    • Medical technologies
    • and some apprenticeship programs.

This path will fulfill most students’ needs.

Math -3

Mathematics-3 is intended for those students who want to:

  • Apprentice to a trade or enter the workforce directly after high school.
  • It is designed to meet the entrance requirements for apprentices in most trades programs, specifically levels one to three.

Math -4

Knowledge and Employability Mathematics-4 courses focus on developing essential mathematics knowledge, skills and attitudes needed for everyday living at home, in the workplace and in the community.

These courses are designed for students whose needs, interests and abilities focus on basic mathematical understanding.

Math AP

The Advanced Placement Program at James Fowler provides students with an opportunity to:

  • Earn university credit while in high school
  • Undertake rigorous university level course work
  • Use AP credits for advanced placement in university courses
  • Pursue a double major and
  • Study abroad

AP math is offered at 10, 20, and 30 Level.

Arts Centered Learning

James Fowler offers the Arts-Centred Learning Program for Areas I, II and III. We provide an opportunity for students to learn and meet required Alberta Education curriculum outcomes in English, Social Studies, Science and Math through an Arts-Centred Learning model.

ACL math is offered at 10, 20, and 30 Level.

Innovative Ideas

The James Fowler math department is comprised of a group of teachers who will give each student the best opportunity for success. The teachers collaborate with each other to create innovative projects and lessons that incorporate different technologies, different art forms, different music genres, different games, and different skill sets. Math at James Fowler is so much more than note taking and test writing. It is an interactive experience with students as the focus. The typical mathematics student at James Fowler is going to travel on a three year journey, where the concepts they learn in class are presented in an innovative manner that connects those concepts to the real world while also providing a plethora of opportunities for the student to demonstrate their understanding of the concept through multiple mediums. At James Fowler High School math comes alive, math becomes more than just numbers on a page, math becomes a tool that students can use to understand the world around them. James Fowler is the right place for YOU to learn math.
