Our Talented Team

Tink, Garry - Principal
gctink@cbe.ab.ca

I grew up in rural Alberta and spent most of my time working in the Foothills School Division.  I have taught everything from Kindergarten to High School and loved every moment of it.  Looking forward to year two of this adventure!

Clark, Gayleena - Assistant Principal

It is hard to believe that we are already in year two of this journey - how time does fly!   I am very fortunate to have the opportunity to be a part of JCS - the staff and students here are wonderful!  GO RAVENS!

When I am not at work, I have two awesome boys, a dog and husband that keep me busy.

I am excited to be a part of the team opening JCS and look forward to meeting all of the new "Ravens" and welcoming them to the JCSHS family!

Rand, Tracy - Assistant Principal
TMRand@cbe.ab.ca
It is an honor to be joining the JCS community in its second year of opening.   I grew up in rural southern Alberta and moved to Calgary with my husband twenty-four years ago to begin my teaching career.  I have taught grades 7 through 12, mainly in the curricular areas of mathematics and sciences in both the classroom and online learning environments.  I am excited to work alongside JCS staff, students, and the family community to ensure the success of each student.
Alberts, Jennifer - Teacher
jlalberts@cbe.ab.ca
I have taught social studies for 15 years and am excited to join the team at JCS. With previous time spent at Beaverbrook and Forest Lawn, I just finished two years of teaching social studies online to students across the province. While I have experience in all levels and both streams of social studies at the high school level, I have also taught AP and Arts Centered Learning.  I mark 30-1 diploma exams 5 times a year, and love both history and travel. In fact, this summer I travel to Europe to tour the World War I and II battlefields, and can’t wait to share that with my fellow ravens this fall.
Alves, Paula - Teacher
PCAlves@cbe.ab.ca
I am excited to be joining the JCS community! I have taught with the CBE for 15 years teaching French and Spanish as well as English Language Learners.  I am passionate about travelling and experiencing different cultures from around the world.  When I’m not teaching, I love spending time with family and friends, trying new and unique restaurants in Calgary, going for long bike rides and walks.  Go Ravens!
Anderson, Megan - Teacher
maanderson@cbe.ab.ca
Ms. Anderson was a bookworm before she could even walk. Her nickname at school was "Dictionary Girl," and her teachers were convinced  she was destined for life as an English teacher. She told her teachers they were crazy, but after a 7 year journey through various post-secondary and career options, Ms. A came to realize that teachers are usually right. So here she is!    Over the years, Ms. A has taught English at every grade level from Grades 7 through 12 and loved them all. She spent the first 5 years of her career teaching in a rural K-12. She moved to Calgary to be closer to the mountains while still teaching in a city with prairie spirit. When she isn't soapboxing about the virtues of proper grammar, Ms. A is an avid hiker, camper, baker, and appreciator of cats. Ms. A's family includes her awesome wife, their two cats, and several neglected houseplants.
Annand, Debbi - Teacher
DLAnnand@cbe.ab.ca
I am excited to be a Raven. I was born in Kingston Ontario and have lived in many different places growing up as my father was in the military.  I have been teaching with the Calgary Board of Education for 20 years so most of my adult life I have lived in Calgary.  Math is my passion and I love passing this along to my students.  In my spare time, I enjoy going for walks with my dogs,  Kathy and Josh.

I was born and raised in Ontario, but I’ve been living in Alberta for 3 years now, and my love of the mountains knows no bounds! Black, Jennifer - Teacher
jawoodard@cbe.ab.ca
I  believe that a woman's place is in the Revolution. I am a total nerd & I know pretty much everything about Star Wars & literature. I caused all of my mischief before Youtube and camera phones (thank goodness) and spend my days raising 5 children, teaching students how to think and crocheting afghans for the people I adore. I love politics and I am fascinated by the narratives created to help us understand history.  I have two undergraduate degrees and a Masters degree in English. I have taught everything from Introductory English to freshman at at the University of Regina to Creative Texts and Textiles to junior high students here in Calgary. One of my areas of expertise is in Social Studies. I am looking forward to being a Raven and helping the future Prime Minister of Canada conquer the challenges of high school. I am always available to hear your silly jokes, listen to your woes and encourage you when you need it. I can't wait to learn approximately 800 new names and to work with students, staff and parents to make JCS a place we want to be every day.
Blundon, Kristen - Teacher
kdblundon@cbe.ab.ca
Kristen Blundon was born and raised in Newfoundland, where she realized her love of reading, rebellion, and all things political and nerdy.  In 2008, after teaching for a year on the island, she moved to Calgary to chase her dreams of attaining a teaching position that was more than subbing.  In 2011, after teaching at a plethora of junior high and high schools, Kristen finally gained a continuous contract with the CBE at Juno Beach Academy, moving afterwards to Lord Beaverbrook, and finally, to JCS.  Her motto for life which she encourages her students to live by is "If you can't tell me why I should do it, I'm not doing it." When she's not contemplating how to change the dystopian future that we already live in, Blundon likes to read, cross-stitch, snuggle her dog, and travel in order to find the meaning of human existence. Some recent places Blundon has travelled to alone on her existential journey are Colombia, Estonia, Holland, Montenegro, Bosnia, and Croatia.  She has not yet found the meaning of life, but will continue her search till she finds it.  Kristen hates small talk and just wants to have meaningful connections with her students beyond "wow, the weather has been crazy lately."  She encourages you to talk with her about human existence, your individual purpose, and how to change the world.  Ravens are currently her animal of choice.  She's always wanted to have wings.

Hiya! It’s great to be back at JCS for round two! I’m a science teacher with a background in organic chemistry and a loud nerd. I enjoy playing music on a variety of instruments, video games of all sorts, playing and coaching volleyball, and D&D. I come from the exceptionally small town of Milk River, Alberta which boasts a staggering population of 800 people, but I moved to the big city to play music and experience a different style of life. This year I’ll be the green community’s Science 10 teacher once again, and I’ll be developing and teaching the Forensic Science option at the school. I can’t wait to get started! GO RAVENS!
Cummings, Shayda - Teacher

I have been an educator for over 15 years and taught on Vancouver Island and Saskatoon before making a home here in Calgary. Doerksen, Janet - Teacher
jrdoerksen@cbe.ab.ca
I moved to Calgary from Winnipeg 21 years ago but will always be a Winnipeg Jets and Blue Bombers fan.  If I’m watching TV, I’m watching sports.  I love spending my free time outdoors to bike, golf, paddle, ski, or take a walk.  I especially love hiking in the mountains and try to get out there every weekend.  As for teaching, I am passionate about Career & Technology Studies and the many opportunities these courses offer for students to explore different interests, learn new skills and pursue their passions.  I have taught many different courses in CTS and I am excited about joining JCSHS to teach Photography.
Dow, Sheila - Teacher
SSDow@cbe.ab.ca
My name is Sheila Dow, and I'm in my 17th year of teaching. I am a self-described science nerd (with a BSc in Biology) who loves to teach youth about the wonder of the scientific world. My hope is that when students complete a year in my class they walk away with a new appreciation and wonder for how science is integrated into everything we do and how science plays an important role in everything around us: the way we produce and use energy and how it affects our everyday lives both now and in the future, and the way we interact with our environment (nature-wise and in the urban parks) impacts wildlife and their ability to surive and thrive.  I’m returning to high school (so to speak) after a very long absence and am excited to dive back into my first teaching passion – high school biology and chemistry!

I am excited to be starting my 23rd year of teaching at JCS.  I will be teaching Art and Creative Writing.  These are perfect forms of expression for a proud introvert like me. PS: I have a thing for David Bowie. I have sort of been obsessed with him since 1976.
Higgins, Trish - SIS
plhiggins@cbe.ab.ca
As a native Calgarian, it has been interesting to have worked at one point in my former high school (LBHS),and moved on to open two new high schools - Robert Thirsk and now Joane Cardinal-Schubert. My job involves everything to do with student records, information, marks, and ensuring students have everything needed to graduate.  This is going to be an amazing high school and I'm excited to be a part of it.  Go Ravens!
Howie, Chad - Teacher
cghowie@cbe.ab.ca
I am eager to embark upon a new adventure at JCS as a Raven. I once envisioned myself fleeing limb-crushing boulders and vaulting pits of poisonous snakes as the next Indiana Jones. As such, I studied archaeology before deciding the escapades of a teacher were more audacious and rewarding than traversing rope bridges over croc-infested waters.  I’ve taught humanities for 14 years, love to travel, eat history up, and have two young girls that keep me on my toes.
Iman, Safi - Support Staff

I love getting outside and staying active. I cycle, run, swim, hike and do lots of other activities to maintain a healthy lifestyle. I am looking forward to opening a new school and being part of the JCS community!

jlmadsen@cbe.ab.ca
Hello everyone!  I grew up in Turner Valley, just south of Calgary.  Throughout my youth I spent a lot of time camping and hiking; something I enjoy to this day.  I am a passionate science advocate and I have recently completed my Masters of Science, focusing on science education.  I am especially passionate about chemistry and physics.  When I’m not out camping or in the lab, you can find me in the garage working on rebuilding my truck and dreaming about all of the classic cars I wish I could have.  I have been with the Calgary Board of Education for seven years:  five years at Sir John A. Macdonald School and two years at Lester B. Pearson High School.  I am very excited to be a part of the Raven community and am looking forward to meeting you all.

My other hobbies include camping, being outdoors, keeping up with political and international issues, and hanging out with my two cats.
Malloy, Jennifer - Teacher
jekent@cbe.ab.ca
I am originally from BC, but moved to Calgary seven years ago as I fell in love with the proximity of the mountains, and, as it happened, another teacher. My wonderful husband is also the reason I chose to pursue teaching as a career after spending most of my twenties working both in publishing and as a journalist. Most evenings I can be found curled up with a good book, a hobby I hope to inspire my students to also pursue! I also believe the best education can be obtained from travelling. My wanderlust was ignited when my parents moved me and my four siblings to Nepal at the age of seven. I have since traveled to over 25 countries, and my favorites include: Peru, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, and Portugal (I also wholeheartedly believe in the use of the Oxford comma). Outside of teaching and travelling, I suffer from summit fever. I have been an avid hiker since my dad took me on my first hike to Lake O'Hara at the age of three, and I have been bagging peaks of all shapes and sizes since I was 12.
Matheson, Krista - Teacher
kbmatheson@cbe.ab.ca
I grew up in SE Calgary and loved the different experiences CBE offered me as a learner.  As a teacher, over the past seven years I have had the opportunity to teach high school Math and Science in Spain, the UK, and right here at home.  Outside of school I make pottery on the wheel, cross-stitch, and love to research family history  for both friends and family.  I am so excited to have the opportunity to work with the students at JCS!

In my "spare time", I coach a lot of rugby, play rugby, read, hike, and borrow people's dogs to walk. I am very excited to be at JCS and join the Ravens!
McKinnon, Amberlee - Learning Coach

I was born and raised in Ontario but Calgary has been my home for the past 9 years.  I have taught many subjects throughout my career in the CBE but I am most passionate about helping students find their passion whether it’s with drama, sports, social justice or academics. McLeod, Keith - Teacher
krmcleod@cbe.ab.ca
I started in the CBE in 2009 and have taught in every corner of the city. In that time, I’ve specialized in chemistry and physics, and started and run two city champion girls rugby programs, including the one here at JCS. I spend as much of my day with students as I can, so you can always finding me helping out during SOAR on the third floor; come say hi! Outside of school my son Ollie definitely takes the priority of my time, and my dog Trooper scoops up a lot of what is left.  When I get time to myself, I love mountain biking and board games, and often spend most of my summer (and weekends) refereeing rugby.

I have taught Business Education in a variety of CBE high schools, but never in a brand new building!  I am looking forward to the challenge of becoming a Raven and creating a positive and exciting culture of learning.  Rugby to a Welshman is like hockey to a Canadian – it is in the blood.  I have been a player and a coach for over 40 years and hope to contribute to the Raven rugby program in some capacity.  In my spare time I run a taxi service – mostly taking our two teenage children to various sporting commitments (hockey/volleyball).  My claim to fame is that I attended the same university as Prince Charles (not in the same year!), University of Wales, Aberystwyth.

My wife opened a new school two years ago, so I figured I’d follow in her footsteps! I’m looking forward to an amazing journey, building relationships with students, staff and parents at JCS! Go Ravens!

I am a dual citizen, Canadian and English. I have lived all over Western Canada. I went to high school in Surrey, BC during the ‘80’s.  After that, I went to UVic.  I love Art, dogs, hiking, and, nature — a bit of a hippie, I suppose.  I live in Calgary with my husband and my dog, Edith Rose.  I have taught many subjects over the years, including Art, Mechanics, Foods, Off-Campus Education,.... I am excited to be starting my 23rd year of teaching at JCS.  I will be teaching Art and Creative Writing.  These are perfect forms of expression for a proud introvert like me. PS: I have a thing for David Bowie. I have sort of been obsessed with him since 1976.

I am eager to embark upon a new adventure at JCS as a Raven. I once envisioned myself fleeing limb-crushing boulders and vaulting pits of poisonous snakes as the next Indiana Jones. As such, I studied archaeology before deciding the escapades of a teacher were more audacious and rewarding than traversing rope bridges over croc-infested waters.  I’ve taught humanities for 14 years, love to travel, eat history up, and have two young girls that keep me on my toes.

She brings a wealth of knowledge as not only an accomplished chorister and opera singer, but also as a 14+ year high school choral music veteran.   Groups under her direction have garnered critical acclaim for choral music excellence as well as top festival honours year after year.  A past nominee for both the Alberta Excellence in Teaching Award (2016) and Canadian Music Teacher of the Year Award (2018), Ms. Wood is recognized for her passion, dedication, and care she brings to her classroom every day!  She is looking forward to working with the amazing staff and students at JCHS!

I have been teaching Humanities for 15 years (10 with the CBE) and am excited to be joining the JCS team! My passion is designing meaningful learning opportunities for all students and I am currently taking my M.Ed in Educational Neuroscience (aka how the brain learns and how we can apply that to education). Outside of school and my studies, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, being at the lake, practicing yoga, and reading.
