Support for Students at the CBE

Our students’ success is our top priority and we understand that our students live complex lives and that many factors both in the school and outside of school can affect their ability to learn. The CBE offers a variety of services (such as Culture and Linguistic Support, Exceptional and Special Needs, and Psychological Services) to support students, their families and our school, so students can be successful learners. Students with Special Learning requirements

Special education refers to the education of students with mild, moderate or severe disabilities and those who are gifted and talented. (Alberta Education)

At Joane Cardinal-Schubert High School we focus on student learning of all students with consideration to our students who have special learning needs.  The staff at Joane Cardinal-Schubert High School makes every effort, with the resources available, to accommodate the learning needs of students who have special education coding resulting from an assessment (psychological, psycho-educational) or a diagnosis (medical).

At Joane Cardinal-Schubert High School we have processes and procedures to provide a positive learning experience for our special education students.

Following is a flow chart that explains the process of an Individual Program Plan (IPP):

  • An assessment is brought into the school and given to Linda Floyd, Learning Coach, Student Success Centre.
  • A review of assessment is completed by the Student Success Team and in consultation with the Administration if necessary.
  • The coding is determined based on the assessment and Alberta Education guidelines.
  • Thereafter, the code is inputted into the Student Information System computer program.
  • Teaching staff and final exam personnel are notified about the student’s diagnosis, coding, and accommodations in order for the accommodations to be addressed when the student self-advocates for use of the accommodations based on the learning needs in the particular course.
  • It is important that parents/guardians make their son/daughter fully aware of the accommodations within the assessment.  
  • An Individualized Program Plan (IPP) is created taking information from the assessment and conferring with the student and his/her teachers. A parent(s)/guardian(s) may be contacted if further information is required.
  • The IPP can be printed, or emailed to parents/guardians upon request, or the parent can wait until the IPP’s are handed out at Parent/Teacher/Student Interviews in Semester 1 and Semester 2.
  • At the end of the school year IPP’s are available to students and parents/guardians upon request.  All IPP’s are printed so a hard copy can be inserted in the student’s file (Official Student Record).
  • NOTE:  Grade 12 students, who have an IPP and are planning on attending a post-secondary institution in the future, are requested to make sure they obtain a hard copy of the IPP (before the school year ends) to take to the post-secondary institution to receive the accommodations they require for their learning.
