January Message

Dear Keeler parents and/or guardians,

Just wanted to let our families know that that the 2020 Accountability Pillar surveys are now open and that the parent surveys will be mailed out this week.  If you require a survey for a specific language translation, please contact Mr. Bane (ndbane@cbe.ab.ca).  The survey is open from January 13th, 2020 to February 28th, 2020.

The Alberta government has a system for school authorities to consistently measure success and progress, called the Accountability Pillar. The Accountability Pillar uses 16 measures that show communities how schools and school authorities are performing each year. Schools and school authorities use the results to identify areas for improvement and to help build their education plans.  This system helps the province, school authorities and schools track successes and improve the quality of education for students. It also helps build a more transparent K to 12 education system, focused on constantly improving across the province.

For more details please visit the Alberta Education link https://www.alberta.ca/accountability-education-system.aspx  or contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

In addition, this will be the first reminder of many to come that on March 19th, 2020 is our second Learning Conversation (Student-Parent-Teacher Conferences) from 1-8pm. Our original school calender indicated that it was a regular school day which was incorrect.  March 19th, 2020 will be a early dismissal day at 12:09pm.  Information on booking will be sent in March.

December Message

Dear Keeler Parents/Guardians,

Thank you to the students, staff and families who made our Winter Celebrations with Quest theatre last week so successful. It was heart-warming to see all of our students so happy and excited to perform for their families and to see the same energy and enthusiasm being reflected back at them by their parents/guardians and community.

It has been a busy month with our winter celebration, visits to the public library, Phil Kids concert, ongoing learning and all the excitement that December brings.  I am so grateful for the Keeler parents and extended family members. Your ongoing support of Keeler School is heartwarming. Thank you, school council, and all the parent volunteers as you continue to support our students with funding field studies, and volunteering for field studies.  I would also like to extend a sincere thank you to all our community partners that serve our school (Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Calgary Mosaic Club, Big Brother & Sisters (West Island College), YMCA, Start to Finish, Meals on Wheels, Brown Bagging, and the CBE legal team) Your ability to show how important it is to care about others in so many ways creates the very village to which we all want to belong.

I also want to thank our incredible Keeler Staff. We have had challenging moments over the past few months; your strength and resiliency is endless. I have come to know when times get tough our wonderful staff pulls together and finds ways to lift our spirits high.

As you make your way through this wondrous season of giving, may your time with family and friends be filled with laughter and joy. May the food you share be made with love and may all your travels over the holidays be safe and smooth sailing.  Keeler Staff wishes all of our wonderful families the happiest of holidays and hope you are surrounded by the light and love of family and friends.  We look forward to seeing everyone back on Thursday January 9th, 2020.

Keeler School Community,

I am thrilled to introduce myself as the new principal of Keeler School.  My name is Kenny Yeung and I am extremely honoured and excited to have the opportunity join the team at Keeler school.

I have worked for the Calgary Board of Education in a variety of positions from classroom teacher, PE teacher, to learning leader and most recently as Assistant Principal at Terry Fox school. Previous to Terry Fox, I worked for at Langevin Science school in a K-9 context and opened up Twelve Mile Coulee school. I can't wait to be part of the Keeler school community.

I look forward to working alongside you and the community to continue to collectively build Keeler to be an incredible school where students thrive intellectually, grow to be active and engaged citizens and learn to be kind, caring and empathetic individuals.

Enjoy the summer, I look forward to meeting each one of you and the students in August.

Principal's Message  August - September 2018

Welcome Back!

We hope you have enjoyed a safe, restful and wonderful summer!  We were so happy to welcome students back. They all seemed so thrilled to be back at school and ready to learn!

We have new staff that we are please to introduce.  Anna Parkhurst is teaching our CSSI Class.  She comes to us with much experience and enthusiasm for working with students in specialized learning environments.  Also new to the CSSI team is educational assistant, Sarah Bel de Lescure  . Sarah did her practicum in the CSSI classroom two years ago and has been part of Keeler staff in other assignments. She will be a wonderful asset to the team. One more new member to this group is Norma Stoski, lunchroom assistant.

Also we welcome Rei Duncan – who will be teaching music to all classes and sharing one of the grade five classrooms with Ms. Toh.   She is along way from her original home of Australia – but is enjoying Calgary and brings many wonderful talents with her.

Welcome to Barry Marsh who is our speech language assistant in our E.D.C. Classroom this year.  She is a lovely addition to our youngest learners’ classroom team.

We are also thrilled to have Lali Garcia as a math coach and learning leader.  She will be working with us to provide support to enrich our math instruction, which is one area we will focus on in our School development plan this year.

Welcome to all of you – we know you will enjoy being part of the Keeler Cougar Family!

Over the following few weeks teachers and students are working hard to establish respectful, safe and caring learning spaces.  We are hosting a drumming residency, thanks to the generosity of School Council! This experience with drumming supports our beliefs to work as a collective, communicative, inclusive community. Please join us at our weekly Monday morning assembly on September 17th to celebrate the students learning and drumming skills.

We had a wonderful turn out at our Welcome Back Barbecue and Meet the Teacher Evening! It was wonderful to see so many of our families!

We were fortunate to receive donations of backpacks for our students through corporate sponsorship. Thank you Telus and Staples! Students were thrilled to receive these and appreciated the generosity from others.

As well as mathematics we will continue out focus on literacy and developing a joy and love for reading and strong reading skills.  We have been fortunate to again receive a private sponsorship to support our partnership with Calgary Reads. They donated books for students, available at the barbecue for students to take home to home to add to their home libraries. They are also setting up a reading rally for our grade one and two students on September 25th.

Looking forward to a wonderful year ahead of learning and growing with all our Keeler Cougars!

In the Spirit of Generosity and Belonging,

Denise Nimmo

Principal’s Message May 2018

May is here and it looks as if Spring may finally have arrived!  Students are so thrilled to have the opportunity to enjoy the sunshine at recess and to complete some of their learning opportunities.  On Friday, April 27th family groups had a lovely time celebrating and honoring Earth day by participating in a yard clean up. Students did an amazing job – and finished their project by enjoying freezies together.  Once a month students participate in their family group by working on projects together as one of the ways to focus on The Circle of Courage.  The Circle of Courage which guides our school community in the spirit of belonging, generosity, mastery and independence. Students and staff really look forward to this time as we work together across grade levels and develop our school spirit and develop a stronger school community.

On April 27th, your children brought home a copy of “I Can Statements” which reports their ongoing progress with literacy. Please take some time to celebrate with them their growth and discuss with them their next steps and goals for reading. This is part of our ongoing work of our school development plan, which focuses on literacy and improving enjoyment of reading and increasing achievement.

May and June are exciting months ahead with many scheduled events coming up. Please see the calendar of dates.  To name a few our volunteer tea is scheduled for  May 25th from 7:30 until 8:30.

Keeler cougars are to be commended on their generosity over the past few months as they worked tirelessly fundraising for ARRCS.  The grade four team held bake and popcorn sales, which brought in $1500 for this wonderful organization.  Students were also heavily involved in mathematics and literacy through the planning and preparation of this ongoing project.  On April 30th ARRCS is visiting and the grade fours will be attending a field trip on May 2nd.  Keeler Cougars are demonstrating what wonderful global citizens they are.

In the ongoing spirit of generosity and belonging

October/November Update

We have had an amazing start up! We would like to acknowledge and thank our wonderful school council for supporting our Hoop Residency. Beginning the school year with a whole school project that focused on inclusion and belonging was very empowering.

Teddy Anderson is the Hoop Dancer who shared his talents and taught students how to dance. “Teddy’s intent is to spread the oneness of humanity through his hoops and teach the message of peace and unity of all Nations.” The Hoop Dancing is based on the Medicine Wheel, which aligns with our work at Keeler on The Circle of Courage.

Our students worked tirelessly with Teddy to learn the various poses of Hoop Dancing. The difficulty of the moves progressed through out the grades. All students held up a beautiful medicine wheel that they created with their hoops at the end of their dance. This was extremely touching and moving.

Our students beautifully told their stories through dance to provide hope through their hearts for an amazing year at Keeler based on a strong community. As we go into fall break we would like to wish you all a wonderful Thanksgiving and look forward to continuing our journey of learning and growing together following the holiday.

Yours in the spirit of generosity and Belonging,
Denise Nimmo
