December Message

As 2018 comes to a close, we would like to say thank you very much for all of your support and warm wishes. It was an exciting wrap up to this first part of the school year. We are so fortunate to have all of you as part of our wonderful school community.

We are saying farewell and welcome back to a few members of our staff.

Thank you to Ms Isobel Ross, who has been on an exchange since January 2018. From arriving in the deepest, darkest cold to saying good bye during this balmy December, she has experienced the many faces of Canada. She has been a grade 5/6 teacher and a valued member of our staff. She is returning to her home school near Melbourne, Australia. We all learned from Ms Ross and we wish her well as she heads back to the southern hemisphere.

Thank you to Ms Taylor Gierl for eagerly joining our school this fall. She has been teaching grade 1/2 since September and has formed strong relationships with students and staff. She is moving to Royal Oak School and we hope she will keep in touch.

Many of you know Ms Burnham and Ms Morden from their time as teachers at Lake Bonavista School. Ms Burnham has been on an exchange since January 2018 teaching in Ms Ross' school! She has travelled throughout Australia and we are happy to welcome her back in January 2019 to her grade 5/6 classroom.

Ms Morden's family has grown and she is returning from leave in January. She will become the grade 1/2 teacher in room 9. She and Ms Gierl have a strong transition plan and we look forward to Ms Morden's return.

In what ever way you celebrate this time of year, we hope your holiday is filled with family and friends with a perfect balance of activity and relaxation.

We wish you and your loved ones the happiest of holidays.

As we say farewell to 2018 and hello to 2019, we would like to remind you of some important dates.

Welcome Back to School and PowerSchool

Hello Lake Bonavista School Families,

We hope you are enjoying a wonderful summer. We are looking forward to welcoming everyone back to a new school year of learning on September 4, 2018.

Over the summer CBE introduced a new student information system called PowerSchool. This system tracks and manages all student data. As a result of the new system you need to create a new 'My CBE Account'. If you have done this, and downloaded the app, you may also see that a homeroom teacher has been assigned to your child. We ask that you please disregard this information. These names were placed in draft class lists in June. The information you are seeing is likely inaccurate, is NOT up to date and it is not finalized. The teacher names assigned to your child are simply a placeholder during the initial set up of the program. Furthermore, sharing the same teacher name with a peer does not necessarily mean they will be together in the same class. Please note, as we continue to adjust our student roster and staffing we cannot accept requests for specific teachers or for class placement with specific peers.

School starts for students in Grades 1 to 6 on Tuesday, September 4th. Class lists will be posted at 8:00 am outside at the east, west and south blue doors of the school.  Students and parents are requested to check the lists and meet their homeroom teacher at the location indicated.Details for Kindergarten staggered entry are on our web site.

Bussing information can be accessed on the CBE website as routes and stops are finalized.

Back to School information is linked from the front page of our school web site.

Further communication regarding how to access and use PowerSchool will be forthcoming early in the school year. In the meantime, continue to enjoy your summer.

We thank you for your patience and understanding and we look forward to seeing everyone on September 4.

Happy June!

Hello everyone,

This is an exciting time of year. Please know that learning continues right until Wednesday June 27. All our classrooms are engaging in many 'once a year' learning tasks that help students to self-assess and reflect. We also have fun events planned that include cooperative and collaborative skill building.

Thank you to all our volunteers for the many ways you support us. The Volunteer Tea was a wonderful time to celebrate the difference you make in our school. If you were unable to attend, please come in to choose your own 'flower' from our table decor.

Please note: dismissal on Wednesday June 27 is at 2:43 pm.

Enjoy this exciting time.

Happy New Year!

We are very excited about the start of the new calendar year. In education we are fortunate to have two fresh starts to the year - in September and again in January! Everyone at Lake Bonavista School hopes you and your family had a happy holiday season and wishes you a wonderful 2018.

The next few months of the school year hold lots of wonderful learning events to which we look forward! Report Cards, Family Dance, Olympics, Student-Led Learning Conferences, Field Trips, Kananaskis in the Classroom, Rocks and Rings (curling), change of seasons and so much more.

We will also be activating a new wireless system. At this time, all the wiring and hardware for the system has been installed. Next, our CBE tech team will be working on 'going live'. All the reports about the new system are very positive: easy access, stable signal, fast. We will send out more information once the system is activated.

New technology hardware will be added to our school, too. The CBE has a system, 'Technology Evergreen Program', to support the updating of our computers, mobile devices and other hardware. Through this funding our school will receive approximately $17 000. Thanks to the generosity and fundraising efforts of our School Council and School Society, we are provided with $12 000 to further improve our students' access to technology. Thank you! We will be sharing our plans for these funds at upcoming School Council meetings.

Learning is our central purpose and at Lake Bonavista School we are engaged in rich tasks that lead to deep learning. Thank you for your participation in this exciting, important work.

Safety Procedures

Don't Forget!

Safety Procedures

The safety of all students and staff of our school is of great importance. To that end, we have been working to establish appropriate safety measures for the various situations that may occur and affect our school community members.

Fire drills are a long-standing expectation of everyone who congregates in a setting such as a school. We are required to have a minimum of six fire drills each school year. Our students and staff treat each drill with respect and we are very proud of their performance during those drills. Teachers are given current class lists during all drills and attendance is always taken. Parents or other visitors are expected to evacuate the building when the fire alarm is sounded.

It is a reflection of the changes in our society that we must add variations to our safety drills. Today we had a practice drill known as a “lockdown”. Teachers reviewed the expectations for all our drills this week and this morning Constable Staneke, Sue Rasmussen and I conducted a practice lockdown.  The students reacted very calmly and safely during the drill. Each class was visited by the constables and they congratulated the students for their responsible behaviour. The drill took approximately 25 minutes to conduct.

If you happen to come to the school and the bell is ringing continuously. Do not enter the building. This ringing indicates that either a practice lockdown or an actual lockdown is occurring. During an actual lockdown no one is allowed to enter or leave the building during the active lockdown procedure.

As we continue to refine our school safety procedures, safety precautions we have in place include:

  • Locking all interior doors
  • Student Contact Info – has been established to ensure timely communication with parents in the event of an emergency. Please make sure we have your most current information in the office. Call or email (lakebonavista@cbe.ab.ca) to update if needed.
  • Visitors – are expected to enter through the front door, sign in at the office and wear a guest/visitor nametag while in the building.
  • Pick Up/Drop Off at Bell times - If you are picking up students, please wait at their dismissal door, pre-arranged meeting place (weather permitting).
  • Volunteers – must complete an annual volunteer registration and a Calgary Police Service (EPIC) security clearance, be familiar with our school emergency drill protocols and wear Visitor nametags at all times.
  • Substitute Teachers – are provided with emergency information upon entering the school.

We appreciate your support in these very important matters.
