Weather, Report Cards, Reading

Dear Parents
With January behind us, perhaps the worst has passed. That said, Alberta is notorious for the weather making us always wonder about what’s around the corner. As a review of our CBE policy, please read on about our Blue-Dot-Days at Manmeet Singh Bhullar School.
Blue Dot Days
When the weather is colder than -20 degrees Celsius (with wind-chill) we function as a Blue-Dot-Day. On Blue-Dot-Days, students are asked to come directly into the school when they arrive after 7:45 AM in the morning. If the temperature remains colder than -20, then students remain indoors during all recess period. Please ensure that students are always dressed appropriately for the weather. Please check out the weather conditions posted on our school website to inform yourself about the temperatures we base these decisions on. Our school safety patrols are not out on Blue-Dot-Days. There will continue to be adults on supervision in the school and at the doors which are unlocked at 07:45 – 08:00 AM. Students should not arrive prior to 07:45 AM.
Attendance on Report Cards
To clarify, about student attendance recorded on the report card, we have had a few questions about the attendance that was reported on the report cards that went home in December. We take attendance every morning and afternoon. Currently, our new student information system, MyCBE/PowerSchool, reports attendance by each of these blocks, so the number of absences indicated on the report card is the number of half days that have been missed. We are all adjusting to this new system and will continue to refine the process as we move forward.
Reading for Family
Learning continues to be our central purpose at MSB School. I came across this quote recently by award winning British author Neil Gaiman. He said, “We have an obligation to read aloud to our children. To read to them things they enjoy. To read to them stories we are already tired of. To do the voices, to make it interesting, and to not stop reading to them just because they learn to read themselves.”
Reading together with your child can be an enriching experience. Children will learn new vocabulary, how to read with fluency and expression along with the information the text has embedded within it. Reading together can also be a valuable social experience. It strengthens relational connections between parents and children. It can open unanticipated but important dialogue with your child and it can be an opportunity to consider social problem solving. Students of every age (grade K – 6) enjoy being read to!
It’s time to dust off an old book, hunt for a new book or reread that same old book for the millionth time. Read it with new eyes. Read it with over the top expression. Read it with a new voice that will catch your child off guard. It is sure to make you both smile; you will sow the seeds for a life long passion to read.
