Principal's Message

Moving Our School Forward Together

I want to take this opportunity to wish you all a Very Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. This has been such a remarkable year full of new successes, new hopes, new dreams and some new special people in our Nellie Family. I am so thankful for all of the wonderful people that come together time and time again to make life better for our community and for the world in which we live. I hope that this special and holy time of year brings happiness, peace and hope for you and your family. As each of you celebrate your family customs, traditions and beliefs please intentionally take the time to create special memories with those you love.
As we move into the busy month of December, we look forward to many special events. Our Winter Concert will certainly be a highlight. Make sure that you join us as we take time together to honour the work of our students and celebrate this special time of year. December will also see the Grade 5/6s heading off to the pool, the Grade 4s learning at the zoo, our clubs swing into full force and of course the annual carolling week will help us strengthen our musical skills.
Student Achievement and Academic Excellence in writing, math and student resiliency are the focus of our School Development Plan this year. Please take some time to read our Annual Results Report (posted on our website) and celebrate with us the great successes our students have had. As we stop and honour the excellent work of students, staff and parents, we also continually look at what the next best steps at Nellie are. Our research is identifying school-wide improvement needed in the area of writing, operational math and student resiliency. To this end, we have entered into significant professional development and student-growth opportunities this year. Our teachers are creating meaningful learning experiences that are targeting specific areas we need to improve.
This year has also been a year of cutbacks, layoffs and struggles for many of our family members. This year the School Council and staff would like to invite you to join them in the Nellie Giving Tree initiative. This year we would like to provide gifts and hampers to Nellie students and their families who may need a little extra joy in their world. Perhaps due to financial struggles or emotional turmoil many of our very own students and their families need a little something special this year. If you know of a student or family who may need a special gift or if you would like to donate to our tree, please send me an email or give me a call.
Thank you all for working hard to create the best school in the city. You are a very committed community always putting students first, continuously striving to build strong relationships and consistently working hard to improve the possibilities for our children. Thank you for taking this journey with us and thank you for always holding to the highest possible standards.
Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and Happy New Year.
