Principal's Message

Building Our Brand Together

I want to take this opportunity to wish you all a Very Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.  This has been such a remarkable year full of new successes, new hopes, new dreams and some new special people in our Nellie Family.  I am so thankful for all of the wonderful people that come together time and time again to make life better for their community and for the world in which we live. I pray that this special and holy time of year brings happiness, peace and hope for you and your family.  As each of you celebrate your family customs, traditions and beliefs please intentionally take the time to create special memories with those you love.
The first 3 months of this year has gone by so fast.  We have been working together to build our new brand, dream new dreams and determine what the next steps for our great school are.  I have been blown away by the spirit of this school, by your care, your compassion and your willingness to come together to support those around you.  From the volunteers at our school every day to the “giving group” to the branding committee to the families who cook meals for staff during interviews, you continually impress me by your willingness to make a real difference.
Our students at Nellie also demonstrate a care and compassion for their school, their community and their peers.  They work hard and they play hard, continually growing and learning through their successes and failures.  They are determined to persevere, work collaboratively and grow in their learning and understanding of the world in which they live.
As we move into the busy month of December we look forward to many special events.  From our Winter Concerts, to our food drive, to our caroling, to our spirit days, to our Winterfest; students, staff and parents will be engaged in meaningful learning experiences.  Christmas will be alive and well at Nellie McClung this year as performances, celebrations and experiences are influenced by the time of year.  We also know that there is Eid, Hanukah and other religious holidays that we should be learning about and including in our traditions.  If you have any special seasonal or religious traditions that you celebrate at this time of year and would like to teach us about, please let me know.  We want all of our community to feel cared for, honoured and respected and we want to learn from you.
There is excitement in the air as students in all grades work through curricular outcomes by building and creating wonderful and authentic work. Student Achievement and Academic Excellence in math and writing is the focus of our School Development Plan this year.  Please take some time to read our Results Report and our SDP, which are posted on our website.  Our research is identifying school-wide improvement is needed in the areas of mathematics and writing.  To this end, we have entered into significant professional development and student-growth opportunities in both of these areas.  We will be working with high impact strategies to improve our students’, teachers’ and parents’ capacities in math and writing.
Math is part of what we do each and every day.  For some reason many of us have learned to fear math or feel as though we are not strong in math.  This year we are going to change that.  We are using math each and every day and we are learning that math is a way of making better sense of our world.  We hope you will join us as we remove the negative connotations of math and help our students demonstrate all of their exceptional skills in this discipline.
Thank you all for working hard to build our future together.  You are a very committed community always putting students first, continuously striving to build strong relationships and consistently working hard to improve the possibilities for our children. Thank you for taking this journey with us and thank you for helping us create the best school community in Calgary.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Darren Dyck, Principal
