Principal's Message

October 2017

Oki, Tansi, hello
My name is Michelle Ranger and I am very happy to return as principal of Niitsitapi li tass ksii nii mat tsoo kop (Niitsitapi Learning Centre). This is my second year as principal of the NLC. In previous years, I was principal at Piitoayis Family School. My family is Métis from Manitoba, where I love to visit every summer. I grew up in Calgary and have lived in many of the Calgary communities our students call home. In my spare time I am active with my family and strive to maintain a holistic healthy balance in life.
October is a time of gratitude and giving thanks. I would like to humbly thank the staff, Ms. Nancy, Ms. Reva, students, parents, school partners and community for a positive start to the school year. Ayyy, hiy hiy! A glimpse of our holistic school focus for the month of October includes:
MIND: Iris and student learning plans, understanding myself as a learner, our school development plan in early literacy. The NLC is an Iris school. Iris is a web-based tool used system-wide to support learners within and between learning communities. Iris was designed by CBE teachers to support the personalization of learning. Iris provides a space for students to reflect upon and share who they are as learners, teachers to gather, document and act upon insights into each learner, professional collaboration. Please ask your child’s teacher more about Iris at conferences.
HEART: Belonging, Tobacco teachings, Family sewing with Ms. Shirley, Thanksgiving activities (What are we thankful for?), Halloween fun.
SPIRIT: Circle Teachings, Blessing Ceremony (date to be shared soon), Sage Teachings. Elder time with Elder Randy and Elder Kerrie.
BODY: Learning from the land, seasonal changes. Pow wow dance with Ms. Shirley, Ronald McDonald Care Mobile health service, classroom and bus safety.
Our ongoing learning focus is to personalize learning for each student through the learning tasks we are asking them to do. From CBE’s Three Year Education Plan we will be asking students:
What they know, How they know it, How they show it, and What they need next?
Students and teachers are excited to share their learning with you at scheduled student-parent-teacher conferences October 5 & 6, please refer to My CBE Account to register or call the main office. Reminder, all CBE schools have two formal report cards a year, the NLC’s are sent home in December and June.
Other reminders
Below is the link to Alberta Education parent site Curriculum Express, it is a readable version of the Alberta curriculum: http://www.learnalberta.ca/content/mychildslearning/
We would love to have you share your unique talents and volunteer in the school, please contact the office to complete the required annual volunteer form.
We are working hard on our new website, in the new year (2018) all newsletters and teacher blogs will be available online.
We hope you can attend our monthly school/community advisory meetings which occur on the last Thursday of every month (unless noted) from 1:30 – 2:45pm. It is a wonderful opportunity to meet other parents/families and community members and provide guidance to our school learning community.
Have a safe and joyous fall break.
EVERY CHILD MATTERS!
With gratitude,
Ms. Michelle Ranger Principal
