Principal's Message

Assessment and Reporting of Citizenship, Personal Development and Character in and Through Learning

In the Calgary Board of Education, Citizenship, Personal Development and Character are recognized as important elements of all programs of study; they are integrated into everything that schools do to advance student learning. We understand that a student’s ability to persevere with learning tasks, to collaborate effectively with others, to take on new learning challenges with confidence and to interact respectfully with others has a significant impact on their learning. We know that taking initiative, making responsible decisions, setting personal goals and acting with integrity are directly related not only to success in school and later work but to the very foundations of lifelong learning.  Citizenship, Personal Development and Character are essential components of all learning, and are embedded in the daily learning experiences in every classroom in every school in the CBE.
Building a comprehensive understanding of their students as individuals allows teachers to respond in ways that build on existing strengths and help to overcome barriers to learning. A key purpose for assessing and reporting aspects of Citizenship, Personal Development and Character that students demonstrate in and through learning, therefore, is to inform teachers’ instructional plans to personalize each child’s learning through individual strategies and accommodations. Another key purpose is building student agency- helping students to develop self-understanding and supporting them in taking ownership of their learning. A third is to acknowledge strength in areas of building community and generosity.
There are always multiple versions of successful demonstrations of Citizenship, Personal Development and Character within any given situation.  You will have an opportunity to see evidence of this learning as well as have time to discuss your child’s strengths and learning plans with your child and their teacher on Thursday, March 21st and Friday March 22nd at our student led learning conferences.  These conferences invite conversation between family, student and teacher(s) that builds a shared understanding of all aspects of your child’s learning. We sincerely look forward to meeting with each of you to celebrate the many learning successes your child is experiencing this year. We will then see you all after Spring Break; do have a safe holiday!
