Warm Welcome from Robert Warren School

Dear Robert Warren Families,

While this has undoubtedly been our coldest week of Winter this season, I could not have asked for a warmer welcome to Robert Warren School!  I wish to thank students, staff, and those parents who I’ve been fortunate to meet this week.

The sense of community within Robert Warren School extraordinary!  A sense of abundant joy is palpable throughout our school.

I’m looking forward to meeting all our parents/guardians in the days and weeks ahead.  Our next School Council meeting has been rescheduled, and will take place on Tuesday, January 28 at 7:00 PM.  During this last week of January, I’m also looking forward to attending School Council meetings at Canyon Meadows and Eugene Coste.

Many thanks,

Colin Haydu

Input for New Principal

Dear Robert Warren School Parents and Families,

It is with mixed emotions that I write this letter today.

I am writing to inform you that I have accepted the position as Principal of Roland Michener School effective January 9, 2020. The Calgary Board of Education is committed to finding an exceptional leader to be the next Principal of Robert Warren School and hopes to do so by the end of December 2019.  It is very difficult to leave the Robert Warren family, yet I am excited for the opportunities that lie ahead.

Serving you as Principal of Robert Warren School has been a great honour and a special part of my personal and professional life. The four years I have spent here with our “small but mighty” community have been rewarding in many ways.

It has been an honour to collaborate with such dedicated parents, teachers and students to make everyone’s experience at our school unique and unforgettable.  My time at Robert Warren School has been nothing short of amazing. I appreciate the many wonderful memories we have made together and the legacy we have built through my time working with you all.

I thank the staff and families for the opportunity to work together and develop a strong school culture of learning for each and every student at our school.

If you would like to share input on the new Principal for Robert Warren School, please check our school website for the survey at :  http://school.cbe.ab.ca/school/robertwarren/

Yours truly,

Cindy Palmer

Welcome Back!

Dear Parents, Guardians and Families,

Welcome back to all of our staff and students for an exciting new school year in 2019-2020 at Robert Warren School!  I hope you had an exciting and adventurous summer vacation!!  A special welcome back to all of our teaching and support staff, and a warm welcome to our new staff members;  Carmen Yunta and Corallia Sevilla.  We would also like to welcome our visiting teacher from Spain, Ignacio Rodriguez Quesada.

Our staff members look forward to working together and building a learning community where we embrace opportunities to excel in a bilingual environment, and where students strive for personal excellence as confident and reflective life-long learners.  We want all of our students to be leaders.  Every person in the school has a different role; whatever role each person has, we want each member to be a leader.  By doing so we all create the culture of the school – we are all culturalizers.

Our new school year starts on Tuesday, September 3 at 8:45 AM.    Doors will open at 8:25 am.

All grade 6 to 9 students are asked to check the Homeroom lists that will be posted in the activity area and then proceed directly to their homeroom.

September 4 will be spent in homerooms , so students will not be following the regular class schedule but rather making connections with their homeroom teachers and peers.

All students will be dismissed at 3:28 PM.

Wednesday, September 5, we will be following a regular timetable.

A few reminders to begin the first month of school:

  • New Mexico Parent Meeting – September 3
  • School Photos – September 12
  • Terry Fox Run & BBQ – September 13 (alternate date – Sept 27)

Please visit our school website for more information and upcoming events later this week.  http://www.cbe.ab.ca/robertwarren

I look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday morning!

Ms. Palmer

A Change to our Digital Device Policy - Away for the Day   no digital devices

In the past, Robert Warren School had a digital device policy in place.  That policy required that students put away their digital devices at the warning bell (morning and afternoon) and that it was only allowed to be taken out with teacher permission during class time for learning.  The exception to this rule was at lunch time when digital device use was allowed.  This policy has been challenging to implement.  The use of digital devices has become a concern due to the difficulty enforcing the policy as it now stands.  During class time it is apparent that digital devices are serving more as a distraction to our students rather than effective learning tools.

Parents feedback has raised some concerns about unsupervised use of cell phones at lunch time in the school. These included how cell phones are resulting in a lack of face to face conversation and social interaction and accessing internet to play games.  Other parents commented on the fact that the use of cell phones could potentially create a disadvantage for those students who do not have a cell phone.

There is much research to suggest that digital devices in the school environment are detrimental to students:

  • Studies have stated that more time on electronic communication results in lower psychological well-being in adolescents.
  • Some studies link a decline in human relationships due to screen time with anxiety and depression.
  • Other studies have shown that the mere presence of the phone (on a desk or in a pocket) can lower working memory capacity.
  • Recent surveys by the Screenagers “Away for the Day” initiative found that 82% of parents do not want their child to use their phone during the school day.

Parents are encouraged to visit the following website for further information on the research on phone use at school: https://awayfortheday.squarespace.com/research/.

For these reasons, Robert Warren School will be implementing a new digital device policy for the 2019-20 school year.

Away for the Day:

  • Personal digital devices are not to be used or visible at any time during the school day.
  • All digital devices must be placed in the student locker immediately upon entering the building.
  • This includes early morning practices/clubs while under teacher supervision.  Devices must be put away once on school property and immediately placed in the student locker upon entering the building.
  • At the end of the school day (3:28 M-R, 12:47 F) students are free to use their devices within the school.

We will borrow the Screenagers initiative name and call this our “Away for the Day” policy.  The policy will be sent home on Tuesday with students. We encourage all parents to read this policy and we ask that parents support us in its implementation.  The policy will have an impact on those parents who have expected their child to answer texts and or phone calls during the school day.  All parents will need to understand that messages left on their child’s phone will not be heard until the end of the school day.  Urgent messages will need to be called in to the school office where school personnel will forward these to our students.  We encourage all parents to ensure that after-school plans and early-dismissal pick-ups are well communicated to your child before the school day.

We value your support in implementing this policy for the upcoming school year.

November 19
November Already

November is upon us already…..it seems like yesterday we were opening our doors to start a new school year and here we are already nearing the end of the year.  We are busy into November with volleyball coming to an end, completing Cross Country races, our upcoming Parent Teacher Conferences, choir and band practices, and much, much more.  I am so proud of all of the students and teachers at Robert Warren who take part in these activities and create a successful environment for themselves and each other.

Have you heard the analogy that humans are like icebergs - that we only let others see 10% above our waterline. Most of who we are and what we stand for can be submerged in the 90% below our waterline.  Teens are no different. As parents and teachers we need to spend the time and effort it takes to see what is below our children's waterline-what makes them tick, what they are afraid of, and what are they hiding from themselves and others?  Dwayne Peace talks about everyone having a story that no one knows about and that if we took the time, we could gain more compassion, respect, understanding and empathy for others.

This month, some of our students initiated a kindness challenge, challenging all students to give one meaningful comment to three other people in one day.  They also provided students with a kindness checklist to assist students with simple acts of kindness to share.  Students were asked how it made them feel to practice giving or acting in kindness, and how being kind made the recipient feel.

We look forward to seeing all of you on Nov 22 and 23 at our Parent Teacher Conferences.  Parent-teacher-student conferences are an opportunity to engage in conversation about your child’s learning. Parents/guardians and teachers are able to connect face-to-face and communicate about student learning, especially with respect to areas of strength and areas of growth. They help build and sustain respectful relationships that allow both parties to share information and develop strategies to support student success.
