Principal's Message

January 16, 2019

Today CBE leaders met with our new Chief Superintendent Chris Usih. Mr. Usih has more than 28 years of experience as an educator. He began teaching in an Indigenous community in Northern Manitoba but has spent the majority of his career in diverse roles with the Toronto District School Board including teacher, principal, and other executive roles.
During our meeting, he talked about how global trends impact how we educate. The future of education and the skills needed for the year 2030, when our current kindergarten students are graduating from high school, are complex. The complexity of knowledge will impact our graduates who are facing rapid technological developments. At the same time, these developments provide opportunities for human advancement.
He referred to the interdisciplinary nature in which knowledge unfolds. Students will need “curiosity, imagination, resilience and self-regulation to respect and appreciate the ideas, perspectives and values of other, they will need to cope with failure and rejection, and to move forward in the face of adversity.” - OECD (The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development)
The implications for us as leaders and educators, and within our role as parents, are to learn how to adapt to change, look at opportunities for growth, examine what is possible, be involved rather than compliant and engage together in the learning process.
We have a shared responsibility to ensure our schools are caring, safe learning environments as we work toward eliminating achievement gaps. At the same time, we need to pay attention to intellectual advancement as well as mental health and emotional advancement of our young people.
I continue to ask that you share your feedback, questions, ideas and input as we move forward together to educate children for the future.
