Principal's Message

Cold Weather, Report Card Data, Enrollment & Parent-Teacher Conferences

Dear Rosscarrock families,
November and December certainly bring back the reality of cold weather. A friendly reminder, that students will need protective inclement weather clothing in days to come. With this theme of cold, we wish to inform you of a few of initiatives to support our school and community families. For example, Winter Concert Food Bank donations, Stephen’s Backpack and Rosscarrock hampers (School Council and Rosscarrock School). We will share more information about how you can support these citizenship causes as the events get closer.
Our staff has been involved in analyzing report card data from June of last year to identify learning gaps that we can close in both Literacy and Mathematics. Our School Development Plan this year will focus on the instructional goal: If teachers engage students in intellectually engaging tasks that employ high impact instructional strategies and assessment in math and literacy then student achievement will improve. For this instructional goal, we have created achievement goals, strategies, achievement measures as well as targets. All of the aforementioned information will be published on our school website in November.
As of Sep. 30, 2017, we had 333 students enrolled at our school. At the end of the school year, CBE had anticipated for our school to have 363 students. We have had many community students/families move from the Rosscarrock communities into other communities. The lower student enrollment has brought less Alberta Education dollars which means fewer funds for the school. As a school we believe that keeping student/teacher ratios low equates to enhanced teaching and learning experiences and student academic and emotional results. The lower budget due to lower school funds results in one of our three Educational Assistants being surplused to CBE. We continue to have supports for students through other staff at school. We are extremely grateful to our School Council for the Casino funds as well as all fundraising that covers for many extras that we would not otherwise be able to purchase.
We look forward to seeing you for our Parent-Teacher Conferences on either Nov. 16 or 17, 2017. During the conference you will hear a more detailed explanation of how your child(ren) are doing in relation to the Alberta Program of studies and the identified learning outcomes.
We look forward to our Remembrance Day Assembly on Nov. 10, 2017 at 10:45 AM, to which you are welcome to attend. As last year, due to the still large student population, we are unable to host all families for one concert. We look forward to our Winter Concert on Dec. 13, 2017 at 6:30 PM where we will feature our Spanish Bilingual Program and our Spring Concert in the third week of April, where we will feature our English Program.
Keep warm, keep learning and supporting your school and those who are in need.
Yours truly,
Ray Suarez Principal
