Principal's Message

Cultural Night, Bell Times & Conferences

We had a great time celebrating our cultures on Cultural Night held on Thursday, February 23, 2018. A huge thank you goes out to all parents and staff that set up booths to share food and insights about their heritage. We also enjoyed student and staff special musical presentations! Many students have requested that we have another round of T-shirt selling. We will provide those interested with forms tomorrow. The due date will be this Friday, March 2nd.
By now you would have received a letter stating the Bell Times for Glenmeadows and Rosscarrock Schools for the 2018-2019 school year. You will notice that both schools will have an early dismissal for students on Fridays. In order to allow for teachers to collaborate, engage in professional development and plan, teachers will teach a little longer each day in order to bank the working hours to accommodate for early dismissal Fridays for students.
For our March Conferences we are preparing your children to share their learning. Having students lead their conferences will demonstrate their ability to communicate growth, areas for improvement, be increasingly reflective and be more accountable for their learning. Our school administration, teachers and students have been working hard to create a process to identify specific outcomes from the Alberta Program of Studies for students to share with you. Students will choose subjects in the curriculum that they are proud of and one which requires improvement. For the areas of improvement, the teacher and student will co-create a goal/plan to demonstrate growth in the future. For this occasion, students will be provided between 30-45 minutes to walk you through their learning journey. During this process, students will have artifacts, projects and/or tasks to perform in front of you. As parents/guardians, you will have opportunities to interact and ask your children questions. Teachers will be circulating in a small group setting as well as be available to guide and support students if required.
One facet of learning deeply is that students are able to speak with passion and power about what they know and how they learned it. Deeper learners are confident crafting a message for an audience. They are self-directed. "They set goals, monitor their own progress, and reflect on their own strengths and areas for improvement." Shifting our traditional parent-teacher conferences so that students lead their own conferences has provided the structure to develop and showcase the metacognitive side of deeper learning even in kindergarten. eleducation.org/news/the-power-of-student-led-conferences-in-primary-grades. "If educators wish to have parents involved to a greater degree in their children's educational experiences, and we wish for students to be more involved in setting personal learning goals and accepting greater responsibility for their academic process, it makes sense to include students at the table when parents and teachers discuss their progress," said Donald G. Hackmann. Hackmann, an assistant professor of educational leadership and policy studies at Iowa State University and author of Student-Led Conferences, has conducted research about student-led conferences.
