Principal's Message

October Principal Message

Did someone rip off the September calendar page? Wow, did our first month of school fly by. This has been a great start, which was appreciated as the weather definitely was not nice for most of September. SWS students quickly fell into the rhythm of school and, in particular getting involved in school activities.  Within the first 2 weeks of school Cross Country and Soccer teams were up and running and our four volleyball teams are crushing the ball. Our Clubs have also started with a flurry of action.  Please check out our Club webpage for more information. September also saw our Meet the Teacher Night and the 10th annual Terry Fox Run.  Thank you to all staff, students and parents for raising over $2500 for the Terry Fox Marathon of Hope.
October is looking like an equally busy month. The month has started with an outstanding sailing trip for grade 9s near Victoria.  It was fun to see students picking up jelly fish with their bare hands while we were in kayaks. Back at the school, we also had visits from two authors, Evan Munday and David A. Robertson.  The two guests shared with the students how to use personal experiences and interests to create stories. With half a month to go, what else will October bring?
At SWS, the teachers have been busy.  Not only planning and teaching, teachers have been spending time getting to know their learners.  Positive learning relationships is key to success for teachers and students.  I know that teachers have been reaching out to parents to have conversations about their learners.  Teachers are also working together to plan what we are going to be focusing on at SWS this year. Themes such as Literacy, Numeracy, Well Being and Indigenous Education.  Later this month, I will be inviting parents to come and be a part of the School Development Process.
In other news, I would like to say a heartfelt goodbye to Linda Easton.  Most of our students and parents may not recognize her by name.  Since the opening of our school in 2009, Linda has been the supervisor of our lunchroom kitchen.  She was responsible for organizing our cookies at nutrition break, cooking the Ribwich sandwiches and all other great foods that come out of the Shawsome Snack Shack.  We are currently in the process of hiring a new cook, but in the meantime these and many more interesting items will be available for students to purchase from the Shack.
