Principal's Message

October

The month of September has gone by so quickly and it appears that the cold weather has returned. One never knows what to expect weather-wise in Calgary, so please be sure that your children are dressed appropriately for the many changes in weather that may occur.

September 19 and 20 was the first round of Learning Conferences this year. Thank you to all the families that made it a priority to meet with teachers. Conferences are an integral part of reporting student progress in the CBE. Along with conferences, we ensure ongoing communication between home and school, two report cards (January and June) and formal learning conferences in November and March rounding out the reporting process. Should you have any questions about how your child is progressing at school throughout the year, please contact the classroom teacher either by phone or email.

As part of their daily physical activity, students at Scenic Acres have been fortunate to receive soccer skills training from PASS with Soccer Scott during the week of September 23-26. Students will also be working with Frisbee Rob on developing their Frisbee skills the first week in October. We’d like to thank the Scenic Acres School Enhancement Society (SASES) for making these authentic opportunities possible for all of our students. Swimming is scheduled for the week of October 21-25, so watch for those field trip forms.

September 30 to October 4 is our first Traffic Safety Blitz of the year! Jen Erno, volunteers, teachers and some members of Monsignor Doyle’s traffic safety group will be visible outside each morning and dismissal to remind people of the rules of the road and encourage families to use the drop and go zone efficiently. We may even have a police officer or two join us throughout the week. A big thank you goes to Jen Erno and her group of volunteers for their commitment and dedication to helping keep the area around Scenic Acres School safe for our students, families and community.

Did you know that the students and families of Scenic Acres School raised over $750.00 for the Terry Fox Foundation? Students and staff ran many laps in the gym for our Terry Fox Run this year and raised $842.70. Because the students surpassed the goal they set, we are having a Crazy Hair Day scheduled for Friday, October 4. Way to go, SAS!!

Before I close, I would just like to remind families that October 11 is a Professional Learning Day for teachers and students do not attend school. I hope all of you have a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend spent with family and friends. We have so much to be thankful for and I feel so fortunate to be the principal of this wonderful school community.

Sincerely,
Carol Hansen

Learning Commons

September has come and gone, and our Book Fair was another success!  I would wholeheartedly like to thank the students, families, and staff of Scenic Acres School for once again supporting our book fair. This year’s book fair made $1813.75, which translates to $525.84 in product for our learning commons. This is a lot of books we are able to add to our collection for students and staff to enjoy. Our family draw was won by Hannah in Mrs. Fairweather’s class. Both Hannah and Mrs. Fairweather were able to choose $25.00 worth of books.

Lunch Room

Fall is upon us and we are in the full swing of things for lunch. This year every student is staying for lunch, as you can imagine this can get quite hectic. We ask that you please try to remember a few things. Please make sure your child has enough food and snacks to make it through the day. They are all growing, and better to send too much than not enough. Also, we have had quite a few students asking for cutlery. Please remember to send forks and spoons with your child as we may not always have cutlery available.

October is here and Calgary’s weather is unpredictable and can change rapidly; please make sure your child is dressed for all weather occasions. We go outside in sun, rain, and snow.

Mrs. Lawson and Mrs. Barrowcliff
