Principal's Message

March, 2019

It is hard to believe that March has arrived! Judging by the weather, it looks as if March has ‘come in like a lion’ and hopefully will ‘go out like a lamb’!
I would like to take the opportunity to thank all the families who are using our drop and go in the mornings and/or parking and walking to school, even with the cold weather. The city has put up new signage around our little round-about with both 2 and 3-hour parking and also some hug and go zones. The city has also informed us that the no stopping sign attached to our crosswalk is required to provide better sight lines for drivers. We will continue to use our pylons to help drivers understand that it is illegal to be within 5 metres of a crosswalk. We remind all families to use the crosswalk to cross the street as jay-walking is illegal. We need to do our best to keep our students safe.

We would like to remind all families to have their children use the front door if they arrive late to school. Please use the round-about by Monsignor Doyle and drop them off at our drop and go zone. Students know that they are to use the front door and check in at the office for a late slip. The side entry door is closed at 8:30 as teachers need to go to class and begin teaching.

Did you know that there are a variety of clubs going on at Scenic Acres? Students have opportunities to participate in activities such as student leadership, performing arts club (coming soon), polar bear club and basketball club for Grade 4s (scheduled for April). Please be sure to sign permission forms that come home if your child is interested in participating. These clubs would not be possible without the support and commitment of the staff at Scenic Acres. I would like to thank them for their effort and energy put towards providing opportunities for students to enhance and expand their interests and talents outside of the regular instructional time. We hope to see a running club, too, once the snow is gone and warmer weather has arrived.

We will be holding Student-Led Conferences for families of all students K-4 on Thursday, March 21 from 4:00 pm-7:00 pm and Friday, March 22 from 8:00 am-12:00 pm. You can book your conference time through MyCBE/Powerschool which will open to families on Sunday, March 3 at 7:00 am. Each time slot will be a half hour in length with two families signed up during one timeslot. Families will spend 15 minutes with the teacher and 15 minutes to look at their child’s work and hear about the learning that has taken place since January. Learning conferences are an important component of the learning process and your child’s learning journey. They are used as an opportunity for students, parents and teachers to celebrate areas of success and set goals for the next steps in learning.

March is certainly an exciting month and I know that students are looking forward to participating in the in-line skating program again this year. Students are reminded to bring their bike helmets for this event. We would like to thank our school council and fundraising society for covering the cost of the in-line skating again this year.

Another exciting event coming to our school is the Usborne Book Fair. The book fair will take place during our conferences and Mrs. Barrowcliff will be sending out more details closer to the date. I would like to thank Mrs. Barrowcliff for giving her time and energy to support our students and our learning commons so well.

As you can see, there is much going on at Scenic Acres School! Not only are we involved in many exciting adventures, we are also planning next year’s calendar. If you know that you are moving out of the Scenic Acres community before September start up, please contact the office so that we can adjust our school enrolment and plan accordingly for the 2019/2020 school year. Families should also be advised that Arbour Lake Open House is set for the evening of Wednesday, April 10th. Exact time will be determined at a later date. Please check their website for more information.

In closing, I would like to send out a very special thank you to the special events committee for supporting our ‘Dress as Your Favorite Storybook Character’ event. The students and staff alike enjoyed this fun morning celebrating literacy and all the characters that came to school that day. The students were very happy to receive pencils and bookmarks that the committee delivered from Chapters and Scholar’s Choice.

Sincerely,
Carol Hansen

 From the Learning Commons:

We’re excited to host an Usborne book fair during our March learning conferences in the learning commons. For every book sold at the book fair our school gets a percentage to purchase new books for the learning commons. Books can be purchased at the book fair, and will be delivered to the student after spring break. Please come support our learning commons.

From the Lunchroom:

Our polar bear club is off and running. The students going outside are thoroughly enjoying themselves and the fresh air. If you would like your student to be able to participate, please sign and send in the blue form.  Just a reminder to please make sure you are sending enough snacks and lunch for your growing children. We continue to have students commenting that they are still hungry after eating. .ExternalClass2FA57D93F5D747FA82C9C4F6705BEA89 p.MsoNormal, .ExternalClass2FA57D93F5D747FA82C9C4F6705BEA89 li.MsoNormal, .ExternalClass2FA57D93F5D747FA82C9C4F6705BEA89 div.MsoNormal {margin:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Cambria",serif;} .ExternalClass2FA57D93F5D747FA82C9C4F6705BEA89 p.xmsonormal, .ExternalClass2FA57D93F5D747FA82C9C4F6705BEA89 li.xmsonormal, .ExternalClass2FA57D93F5D747FA82C9C4F6705BEA89 div.xmsonormal {margin-right:0cm;margin-left:0cm;font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif;} .ExternalClass2FA57D93F5D747FA82C9C4F6705BEA89 .MsoChpDefault {font-family:"Cambria",serif;} @page WordSection1 {size:612.0pt 792.0pt;margin:72.0pt 72.0pt 72.0pt 72.0pt;} .ExternalClass2FA57D93F5D747FA82C9C4F6705BEA89 div.WordSection1 {page:WordSection1;}
