Farewell 2018-2019

Thank you for and Incredible Year!

Farewell …It is not a goodbye, there is no finality to the word but a notion that there is a future connection to be made.

Sherwood staff would like to congratulate all students for their accomplishments throughout the 2018-2019 school year. It is amazing to see how you have grown this year! Your teachers who have watched you grow and become leaders over the years are so proud of you. As we wrap up this school year it is an opportunity to celebrate and reflect, while also looking forward to the upcoming opportunities that our students will have as they move on to the next chapter of their educational story. Every ending is the start of a new beginning – an opportunity for change, new adventures and a chance to re-invent yourselves.

“Today, you close the door to the past, open the door to the future, take a deep breath – step on through and start a new chapter in your lives.” (unknown)

Thank you to all of our Sherwood Families for an amazing year of learning! This week we say farewell to all of our Grade 9 students as they venture off to their new adventures in High School. We look forward to hearing their stories and successes in the fall. We also look forward to welcoming all of our new students coming to us in both Grade 4 and Grade 7! Healthy Minds, Healthy Bodies| As a continuation of our “Healthy Minds, Healthy Bodies” initiative from January 2019, we will continue to focus on: Healthy Nutrition – No Slurpees allowed in the school, use of Appropriate Language – no excessive swearing, and lates and absences – no skipping of classes. We have two additional items that we will be focusing on in the new school year:

Cell Phones/Digital Devices|

Cell Phone use will NOT be permitted during school hours for the 2019-2020 school year. Your child will be required to keep their phone locked in their locker during the school day. There will be no opportunity for them to access their phones. As always, you have access to your child in case of an emergency by contacting our main office at 403-777-7890 (ext: 0). Further information and a more detailed ‘Cellphone and Electronics policy’ to come.

Smoking, vaping/e-cigarettes will not be permitted at any time on school property. This includes all and any rooms within the school (bathrooms, hallways, classrooms, etc.), outside on the school fields, at the front entrance or anywhere that is considered school property. Vaping is illegal for anyone under the age of 18.

The use of lockers for the 2019-2020 school year will be mandatory, students will not be allowed to carry backpacks during the day. We have built in a movement break time block into our schedule for students for next year to accommodate time for them to retrieve and return materials needed for each class from their lockers.

A New Journey Unfolds

“A new journey to be started. A new promise to be fulfilled. A new page to be written. Go forth unto this waiting world with pen in hand, all you young scribes, the open book awaits. Be creative. Be adventurous. Be original. And above all else, be young. For youth is your greatest weapon, your greatest tool. Use it wisely!” – Wonder Woman

Thank you for the incredible welcome Sherwood School! I feel very proud to have the opportunity to lead the learning in this amazing school. We are off to an incredible start to the year and I look forward to where we will go from here. We kicked off the year with a BBQ to welcome all of our new students Grade 4-7 and had an incredible crew of our Leadership students help us for this event. What an amazing way to build community and introduce new students to the Sherwood Archer Spirit!

As we dive into a new school year we are always filled with a sense of hope and new beginnings. As a staff, we began the year by asking the question, “What is your hope?”. We asked ourselves this question in the context of thinking through what we would like for the year ahead. The common themes running through each statement were those of; community, sense of belonging, connection to real experiences, collaboration and communication. These will be many of the highlights of our work this year as we begin to uncover learning and spark imagination for all of our students.

New beginnings bring change, excitement and anticipation. As we entered a new school year this past week, we embraced all that a new year brings. With new friends alongside familiar ones, new grade, new teachers, and new classrooms to make familiar, students and teachers alike came together to begin a new journey. Sherwood students and staff will be defining the story of who we are this year…an epic journey that evolves as we do. We know that being original is something students crave – they share their thoughts and ideas and look for new ideas from their peers. As teachers, we work to find ways to foster this uncovering for the sparks of excitement as they connect and intersect. There is power in education – not just from the answers we may find to our questions, rather in the questions that remain unanswered – the ones that percolate in the back of our minds and make us see connections wherever we go. As the quote above says we need our ‘young scribes’ to be adventurous, creative and original – we know that we can inspire them to use their youth to push the future forward… this journey has just begun and we look forward to where it will lead.

We look forward to welcoming you alongside us on this journey when we meet for Sherburger on Thursday, September 20th from 5:00-7:00pm. This will be an opportunity for you to meet all of our new and returning staff as well as celebrate the start of a new school year with your children and families.

June Update

Excerpted from our June newsletter.

We are excited that spring has decided to stay with us and we hope for lovely weather through the end of the year.

For the remaining month of the school year, we would like to encourage our students to remain focused on their studies and have a strong finish in preparation for their next grade. All division 3 students will have final exams in all 4 core subjects and may have final projects to finish in their complementary courses. Please help your children be prepared for their exams by providing them with healthy breakfasts and snacks to get through the days. As well, each student should come prepared with a pen, pencil and calculator. Good luck to all students on a successful finish to the year.

Thank you for reminding your children to bring locks for their skateboards, bikes and scooters.

In the coming weeks we will be sending out information about school opening procedures. Please stay tuned for updates.

We would like to take an opportunity to thank all of you for your continued support of Sherwood School. We are able to accomplish great things because of your kindness and cooperation.

Sincerely, Lori Gaffney
