Principal's Message

Welcome to Silver Springs!

I am proud to be here in my third year as Principal and am grateful to work with talented staff who go the distance!
Our small family of 265 students have all settled well into routines and not a day goes by without us noticing excellent work habits, bright thinking and sense of care that infuses our building.  Our school community continues to takes pride in holding the bar high for learning and behaviour. We love that our students extend a helping hand, work with and mentor our youngest learners and show respect for one another.  Building an inclusive community is the right thing to do!
This year we have welcomed a few new staff members! Mr. Evan Avery has joined our team as a music specialist and is here at Silver Springs Monday, Wednesday and some Fridays.  His other home is Ranchlands School, working half time there and half time here.  We have a new lunch team of three supervisors (Mrs. Ospina, Mrs. Butterworth, Mrs. Shahwar) and a lead lunch supervisor is being hired this week.  In October, we will add a part time Educational Assistant and a half time teacher to support the needs of our larger classes at grades 3-6.  We have also been happy to welcome Mr. Zhou as our relief custodian while Mr. Wolfe is away.
Our first School Council Meeting was excellent with over 20 parents attending. We continue to be both grateful and impressed with the many ways they support our learning community.  Over the next month, parents will be recruiting volunteers for special events and will be organizing the Food to Table Fundraiser and the Hallowe’en Howler.  With their financial support we will see the addition of a kitchen centre for our Kindergarten, support for a Science Night and a Robotics Residency and additional laptops and iPads for classrooms.  Please consider joining us on the 2nd Tuesday of each month for our School Council and Parent Association Meeting. This meeting, chaired by Mrs. Gukert runs from 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm in the library.  At the meeting in October, we will be gathering input for our School Development Plan.
We do not produce a monthly newsletter. Every Friday, we email a message with a link to The Weekly Update offering an overview of the weekly calendar and a sneak preview of what is happening around the corner. I will send out these monthly principal’s messages. Teachers use blogs and or Twitter, and agenda messages are sent home daily.  Additionally, teachers will email parents or send a School Messenger email.  Events and field trips are posted on our calendar on our website.  Over the course of this year, we will continue to update our website and welcome your comments and feedback about communication processes.
Please feel free to email, call, or drop in for a visit should you have any questions or concerns, or just want to learn a little more about our school community.
I am looking forward to connecting with all of you over the course of the year!
