Principal's Message

December 6 Principal's Message

Hello SWL Families,
At the November School Council meeting I shared the Provincial exam results and we are doing very well compared to provincial averages.  One key area we would like to see students improve upon is reading, so please encourage your child to sign out books from the library and read at home for about 15-30 minutes each day.  This will greatly improve their reading skills.  School and Parent Council have done so much to support our students and have approved funds for a new PC Computer Lab in the Learning Commons.  We really need a few more parents to attend Council meetings.  The next meeting is scheduled for January 29 at 6:00 pm so I kindly request you consider being a part of our School and Parent Council.  If you are interested please contact me directly at dwmartin@cbe.ab.ca.  A special thanks to all the parents who volunteered on Activity Day!  The students experienced many fun and low-cost recreational activities and our hope is that they continue pursuing recreational activities on their own time. Taking time to exercise directly improves concentration and focus on studies.  A big congratulations to the students and Gurveen in grade 7 for spearheading the Coats for Kids initiative.  SWL donated over 50 winter coats for children in need. Nice work! Report cards will be issued at the end of January, but most teachers have set December 21 as the last day for assignment collection.  Please check PowerSchool to see how your child is doing and if they have missing assignments they still have some time to complete them.  To access grades on PowerSchool you need to use a computer as the phone app does not take you to the grade reports.  Don’t hesitate to contact the school office if you have any questions or problems. Lastly, your teachers are always available to provide extra help to students, so if your child needs extra help in a particular subject they should not hesitate to ask their teacher and arrange a time.  We greatly enjoy working with students. Have a good week!
