Principal's Message

Principal's Message March 14, 2019

Hello SWL Families!
It has been an incredibly busy and productive past few weeks at Sir Wilfrid Laurier School and the students and teachers are ready and excited for Spring Break.
A reminder to students and parents that the selling and bartering of goods is not allowed on school property without the expressed permission of the principal.  If your son or daughter is a budding business entrepreneur, please remind them to pursue this part of their education at home and under your supervision.
Report Card Results:  we have examined the first semester report card results to help guide our instruction and planning for the remainder of the year.  Generally, we are on track with our targeted goals for student achievement.  We have noticed a decline in student submission of work since report card 1, so please remind your child of the importance of completing all assigned work and handing it in.  We are also operating a lunch time study hall for any student who wants a place to work or get extra help.  This is a great opportunity to improve.  Teacher blogs and Power School grades are key communication tools for parents to stay up to date with their child’s work and progress.  We also have survey results for health and wellness and not surprising, the biggest hindrance to student success and well-being is the high degree of time they spend on their screens, mostly phones.
When I review our school calendar and talk to students, I am amazed at how hard the teachers work to provide high quality programming.  In the past two weeks your children have been immersed in classes and in many cases, participated in one or more of the following:
Band Clinics- professional musicians working alongside your child in a small group setting
Physical Education Movement- A week long movement programme with expert hip hop dance instructors to enrich our PE movement unit.
Theatre- Grade 8 and grade 9 were at the Theatre to enrich the Drama and English program of study
Leadership- this grade 9 class participated in the AB Youth Leadership Conference and have brought back many ideas for SWL
MADD Canada- presented their “”Weed Out the Risk” programme  to our grade 9 students.
Outdoor Education enjoyed snowshoeing in the Kananaskis Region and examined environmental impacts.
French- we enjoyed a celebration of French Canadian culture with a CARNAVAL largely spearheaded and led by the older grades.
Safety Expo- our grade 6 students are excited about the learning from this programme.
Telus Spark-today our grade 6 students are at Telus Spark to support their science unit of study
Sports-  Our girls’ basketball team played a great season, making it to the semi-finals
-Our boys’ basketball team plays tonight for the final match-go Lightning!
Our School Council plays tremendous role in providing financial support to provide these opportunities for students.  Our Casino deadline approaches and we are in need of 50+ volunteers.  Please consider donating your time to support the 480 students who attend our school.  We need your help to ensure the continuation of amazing education opportunities for your child!  Thank you.  The volunteer document is:  SWL Casino Volunteer Form
Lastly,  we are excited to be working with Dr. Indy Lagu from Mount Royal University to support improved teaching and learning of science and mathematics.  Dr. Lagu will be working with our staff conducting several sessions on best practices to support our learners.
Hope to see you at Parent/Student/Teacher Conferences next week.  Enjoy your week-end,
Mr. Martin Principal
