Principal's Message

June 2018

The arrival of June reminds us that we are in the home stretch of the school year with preparations for the upcoming year well under way. We wish our Grade 4 students moving on all the best in Grade 5. The farewell celebration for Grade 4 students and their families is on the afternoon of Tuesday, June 26 – more details to follow.  We express our gratitude to all our families for their support and openness in working with us for what is best for their child, their learning journey and our school community.
Thank you to the School Council and the Friends of Somerset School Foundation as well as our many volunteers for their tremendous support throughout the school year including a wonderful Sports Day on June 8. Special thanks to Joey for his leadership of the Spring Carnival and many other volunteers that brought our learning community together. Thank you to our past executive for their service and for members continuing on as well new parents getting involved to continue the wonderful tradition of support for students and the school. Your voice makes a difference and supports student learning.
Our final Somerset School Council and Friends of Somerset School Foundation meeting is on Thursday, June 7 at 3:45 PM – we encourage you to attend, everyone is a member! Your voice and involvement makes a difference and supports us in doing our best for students and learning. Babysitting is provided free of charge in the gymnasium courtesy of the Council and FSSF.
Maximizing Resources for Student Learning and Classroom Organization in 2018-2019
We are doing our best to maximize the resources we have, to allocate teachers and support staff for the school, to best meet the needs of all students in a safe and caring learning environment.
* All of our plans and grade configurations are subject to change depending on student need and enrolment changes by the end of June and at the start of the new year in September 2018.
We understand the importance of keeping class sizes at a reasonable level for all grades. In late June and early September 2018 we will re-evaluate the learning needs of the entire student population. We will determine if the configuration (classroom organization of students and use of our teaching & learning resources) continues to be the best approach, based on a variety of factors, for all students.
Factors such as a change in student enrolment at a particular grade level may mean adjusting the classroom and school organization in late June or early September and the re-assigning of teachers and support staff to different assignments. Currently our plan includes our Grade 2 and 3 students being in 4 combined classes for the 18-19 school year and kindergarten, grades one and four being in straight grade classrooms and TASC class. Should our enrolment go through a significant change it “may” also require other changes given the resources we have to utilize to organize and staff the school. We will notify you if such a change is required at that time. Thank you for your understanding and support as we do our best to meet the needs of all students with the resources we have.
Kindergarten and Grade 1 to 4 Registration
At this time we have two Kindergarten classes for 2018-2019 – one morning and one afternoon. If you know of a Somerset community friend or neighbour who has not registered their child for kindergarten please encourage them to contact the school for registration details and requirements.
Heart and Stroke “Jump Rope for Heart”
It is exciting to see the students feeling the joy of activity through skipping this past month. Jump Rope for Heart is a great way to inspire students about a healthy lifestyle and caring for others.  On behalf of the Heart and Stroke Foundation we thank you for raising nearly $4 000.00. Students who participated in this voluntary fundraising effort will be receiving their recognition prizes by the end of June.
Starting the 2018-2019 School Year
The school office will be open for new registrations or questions on Wednesday, August 29, 2018. Students will begin their new year on Tuesday, September 4 at 8:25 AM. Kindergarten students will be given their scheduled start and AM or PM placement designations by the end of this school year.
