Principal's Message

September Welcome Back Message

Bienvenue!  The staff at Sundance would like to extend a warm welcome to all our families for the 2019-2020 school year.   We are excited to welcome back returning students and introducing our wonderful Sundance community to our new students.  We hope you enjoyed your holidays with your children and had the opportunity to create wonderful memories to be cherished for many years to come.
The beginning of a school year is filled with excitement, curiosity and anticipation. It is a time for new beginnings.  The teachers have been busy organizing their classrooms, preparing and planning for the students.  They are ready to nurture and guide our student’s curiosity.  Our first three days together focused on building a school culture that is an inclusive learning environment and setting a clear direction for learning in the upcoming year.  We will continue to focus on building a strong literacy program through effective task design and assessment practices.
Sundance School students will continue to share their work with you in our online environment called IRIS. Here they can upload work, share their learning goals and strategies and begin to make sense of themselves as learners. The site can be accessed from home with your child’s ID number and password. More information will be forthcoming at upcoming school council meetings and through teacher communication. Stay tuned for some exciting work ahead!
The beginning of a new school year is a great time to remind parents about volunteering in classrooms and within the school. In accordance with the CBE Administrative Regulation 5003 every person who volunteers to work in a school must have a current and valid police security clearance on file at the school and have completed the CBE volunteer form.  Volunteer forms will be sent home and available here: Sundance School Volunteer Website Page. If you have questions regarding obtaining your police security clearance, please contact the school office at 403-777-8690 or email volunteer.sundance@gmail.com.
We look forward to seeing everyone at the Welcome Back Breakfast on Friday September 13, Welcome Back Breakfast.
The ‘Student Forms Package’ has been sent home with your child this week. We ask that you take the time to review it carefully, complete and return all the necessary forms by September 16. Contained in this package you will find student demographic information that needs to be signed and verified. At this time, we will not be collecting activity fees for field trips and such.  We are hoping to know more on the subject from the CBE representatives by the end of September. Thank you for your patience.
Sharing Assemblies:
Our sharing assemblies will begin soon and we love it when parents join the audience to support our students as they showcase their learning.  The purpose of the assemblies (which occur approximately monthly) is to give our students the opportunity to showcase learning that is in progress in the classroom.  This can be done in various ways through visual arts, music, literature, drama, technology, dance, movement, etc. The assemblies also give all students the opportunity to learn how to be a respectful audience and become familiar with the work happening in other classrooms.   Please join us at our sharing assemblies so you too can see the great “work in progress” that is occurring throughout the school.  Assembly dates are always included in our weekly updates and on our website.
A few gentle reminders:  Out of respect to our students who are presenting, we ask that parents stay for the entire assembly and ensure cell phones are silenced.  We kindly request that parents keep small children close by and prevent them from wandering during the assembly as this will minimize distraction for the presenters and allow all members of the audience to fully enjoy students’ presentations.
Lunchroom News:
Sundance School offers a supervised lunch program. We have implemented some changes this year, read more here: Lunchtime at Sundance. This page also has information regarding food allergy awareness.
We also aware of potential scent allergies. Please check out our Illness and Medical Page:
Illness and Medical

Safety and Security:
At Sundance School, the safety and security of our building is very important to us.   In order to create a warm and caring atmosphere for everyone in our school community we ask that parents read the following website page to be reminded of security measures we have in place: Sundance School Security
We would like to remind you not to use the staff parking lot as a drop off or pick-up zone. We are teaching our students to use the sidewalk rather than the parking lot when coming in /leaving the school. Parking and Drop Off

If you need to speak with a teacher:
As a staff we are making every effort to preserve the integrity of instructional time so that learning can be maximized. Parents we are asking for your help as well.  Sometimes parents want to squeeze in a conversation with the teacher in the morning once classes have started, during playground supervision or near the end of the day when the teacher is trying to have last minute conversations with students and dismiss them from the school.  It is difficult for teachers to give you their full attention at these times as their focus is on their students.  If you would like to have a conversation with your child’s teacher about a matter concerning your child, please email, phone or leave a note for the teacher, requesting a time for the two of you to meet.  Our teachers are always willing to accommodate parents for discussions around the students’ learning and find that those conversations are most productive when distractions and other obligations are removed.
 Bussing and Transportation:
We hope by now everyone has had a chance to review the bus maps for the 2019-2020 school year; please check the page from the link below for information on how to access the maps. You will also find here the form, ''How children get to/from school', which we ask that you complete since it will let us know your child's going home arrangements.
