June 2018 Update

Excerpted from our June newsletter.
As we count the days down to June 27, our last day of classes, we are aware that there is still a lot of learning and activities occurring at Valley Creek School: Thermopylae Race next (which we hope to break a Guinness Record for the number of participants involved in an obstacle course), Grade 9 Farewell, the Athletic Banquet, the final band concert of the year, our year end activity day (which our leadership students are planning and running), many grade-level field trips and finally the Grade 6 and 9 Provincial Achievement Tests beginning mid-June.
Traditionally Valley Creek does exceptionally well in the Provincial Achievement Tests (PATs). The congregated data has indicated that we have always done better than the Provincial average in the "Acceptable" standard and had very few students in the "Unacceptable". In recent years, Valley Creek students have been achieving better in the "Excellent" standard. Last year, we were above the provincial average in the “Excellent" standard on almost all tests.
One of the goals of our School Development Plan was to increase the number of students receiving "Excellent" on this year's PATs. Teachers across all grades and curriculum have been focusing on increasing students’ ability to solve complex problems and write persuasively. While PATs are only one form of specific assessment on one specific day, we use the data along with other forms of assessment to help guide our planning for next year’s school academic focus. Good Luck to our Grade 6 and 9 students on their Provincial Achievement tests.
While June can be an exciting time of the school year, it also comes with its challenges. Upcoming changes for students can at times lead to less than appropriate choices for students. Administration has been through all classrooms reminding students that our high expectations at Valley Creek remain in place until the end of the school year. Appropriate clothing choices, attendance/lates, cell phone expectation and commitment to school work are areas some students struggle with at this time of year. The school will be contacting home should any of these be challenges for your child.
Our student population for next year is slowly increasing as we are now at 695 students. Please contact the school if you know you will not be attending Valley Creek next year. Additionally, if you know of a family moving into our area please have them contact us so we can add them to our school and plan accordingly.
As always please do hesitate to contact me should you have any questions or concerns about Valley Creek School.
Jason Arrell Principal, Valley Creek School
