    Weekly Update March 30 - Aprl 3

    Hello Valley Creek Families,
We hope that this past week has gone well for you and that you have been keeping safe and healthy.  On behalf of our entire staff, we would like to thank you for your patience as the province works through the current reality.  We recognize that this has created a great deal of uncertainty and we would like to reassure you that the CBE remains focused on ensuring that learning continues.  We also recognize that things will look different from before classes were cancelled.
The CBE’s approach is aligned with the expectations outlined by the province. Content delivery for Grades Four, Five and Six will focus on key learning outcomes for language/literacy and mathematics/numeracy with opportunities to incorporate science and social studies outcomes through cross-curricular learning.  Grades Seven to Nine will focus on core mathematics, language/literacy, science and social studies. Teachers in Grades Four to Six will assign an average of five hours of work per student per week while teachers in Grade Seven to Nine will assign a average of ten hours of work per student per week.
Within the first few days of the upcoming week, you will receive a phone call from your child’s teacher to connect with you and gather some information related to your Internet access and your child’s access to a computer, laptop, iPad or tablet.  When they call, their number may come up as ‘Unknown’ or ‘ID Blocked’ as many of our teachers will be calling from personal devices as they work from home.  Each of our grade teams will be sending out a grade specific message.
We will be working with the staff to choose an online learning platform that suites our students best by Thursday, and teachers will be learning how to use the platform and beginning to plan tasks for the following week.  This time allows teachers to have the necessary planning and preparation time for resuming structured learning opportunities for your child.
Starting Monday, April 6, you will receive information from your child’s teacher about how and when you will be able to reach out to them for help or for clarification.  Additionally, you will receive information about how to access the weekly learning plan.  Each week’s plan will highlight what they are working on, will include various resources, and will explain the tasks they would like your child to work on.
To prepare for this, students will need to know their CBE Student Number, their CBE email and their password.  If they do not have this information, please ask your child’s teacher to provide it when they call.
We recognize this is new for most of us and we want you to know we will get through this together.  We are here for your children and our teachers look forward to being in regular contact with your children and yourself.
We hope this new reality will help bring some routine and connection to your child’s world.  AHS launched a text-based program to help provide encouragement and hope to Albertans.  The text messages are free, dependent on your cell phone plan.   Text COVID19HOPE to 393939 to subscribe.
Together we will continue our learning journey.
