Principal's Message

April 3 Message

​Dear Parents and Guardians:
Throughout this week, teachers have been striving to make personal contact with students and families through phone calls and emails. We have noticed that some of the contact information we have in our system is not current or correct. Please ensure you contact the school with any updates so that we can remain in touch.
In response to classes being cancelled in this pandemic situation and the need to move teaching and learning to an emergency remote learning model, teachers have accessed online CBE approved resources to deliver core class content to their Brigthspace D2L shells. Google Classroom and Google Meet have also been made available to teachers. Many students will be using Google Classroom, but not all, classroom teachers will share their plans on their blog and through School Messenger. One important note about Google Meet sessions with teachers – we ask that students do not record the meeting. Teachers using Google Meet will be sending out reverse consent information to parents.
In this crisis, Valley Creek teachers will use a variety of online tools to support AB Education’s ongoing learning directive for emergency remote teaching for an average of five hours of work for Gr 4-6 student per week and an average of ten hours of work per week for Gr 7-9. Other tools that teachers may use include references to different videos or approved online resources. Each grade team will be sharing their ‘office hours’ to answer questions and provide clarification for students. As we work through this new process, we will continue to evaluate how best to provide tasks and assignments in ways that are easy for families to navigate. As we learn more about ways to work with our students and families effectively and efficiently, teachers will inform you of adaptation and changes. We thank you again for your patience and understanding as we all learn together.
Student work will begin with straightforward, low-pressure tasks. We want to be sure all students understand and are able to manage their online platform. No assessments will be done until we have direction from the system.
Teachers will monitor the delivery of course materials as we progress – we know teachers will need to make adjustments. We recognize that not all students have regular, reliable access to technology and that fitting learning activities into a family’s daily routine may be challenging. The CBE has announced that beginning on April 13th, Middle Schools will be able to sign out some technology to support their community’s learning needs. We have received some requests from parents about this – if more families realize that they would benefit from the loan of a Chromebook laptop, please let me know, or Mr. Comeau know– gucomeau@cbe.ab.ca 
Students and their families received the School District Use of Personal Information document in Fall 2019, outlining how and why student data is shared at the CBE. Teachers will follow these policies as they plan ongoing teaching and learning activities. If you have a concern with your child using these tools to support their learning, please contact your classroom teacher. 
Acceptable Use of Technology
Our expectations around the use of technology remain in place throughout online learning. We ask that you go over behaviour expectations while using interactive technology with your child. Students need to be aware that misuse of technology during live sessions may result in being disconnected from some features. We want students to feel comfortable and safe while participating online. We ask students to report any misuse to their teachers and their parents. 
Students should NOT be recording any online sessions or discussions with their teachers and, as always, should not be posting anything related to their classrooms on any social media platforms. Online conversations, just as in the regular classroom, are expected to be positive and respectful. Inappropriate comments will be deleted and students may have their capacity to make comments blocked if this becomes an issue.
The Alberta Government has stated that all students will be entering the next grade level as we move from the current school year to the 2020-21 school year. They have also made it clear that there will be no Provincial Achievement Tests or grade level final exams. With the help of our system leaders we will determine the best ways to assess student learning and provide assessment information to parents.
Teachers will be in contact with students regularly. We also welcome questions from parents. We know as we move through this period of ongoing learning, there will be questions about such things as refunds for school fees, the organization for next year’s classes, school activities, and selecting option courses. We will be sending information out through School Messenger as it becomes available, and will also include it in the regular Principal’s Update on the school web page.
We are excited to begin this learning journey with our students and look forward to reconnecting as we have been missing them. Take good care of each other and stay healthy and well!
