Principal's Message

February Principal's Message

Welcome to the  beginning of Term 2 at Valley Creek.  For many of our students they will be starting new CTF options while other will continue with their current complementary courses. With report cards recently sent home, it is also a time for students and families to review current academic success and make appropriate plans for future learning. If you believe you child needs additional support  to meet their academic potential please contact your child’s teacher. Our next parent teacher conferences occur  near the end of March and will be by teacher invite for students who need targeted support. If you wish to speak with your child’s teacher prior to this time, please contact them directly.   Student safety and student well-being is very important to us at Valley Creek. Our student no cell phone policy “Away for the Day” has had a  positive influence on students interpersonal relationships, focus in class and student’s ability to disconnect from social media. To review: students are not to have any personal electronic device on them from 7:45 am to 2:30 pm while inside the building, unless given direct and specific permission from a teacher. Students can use devices outside at nutrition break or once they go outside for lunch. This policy is still in effect on indoor recess days when the weather is extremely bad.  Another concern for student well-being is our school parking lot.  Each winter we encounter several “near misses” between students and vehicles in our parking lot. It is imperative that parents/guardians do not drop their child off at the front doors. Drop-offs should occur on  Hidden Valley Drive. Please do not sacrifice student  safety for individual convenience.   With the start of the new term comes lots of extra-curricular opportunities for students.  We a proud to announce our spring production of “This is your Brain on Social Media”. Students should see Mr. Young if they are interested in being part of the cast or crew. Performances will be on April 24th & 25th. The Basketball season has begun with Grade 6 -9 students representing Valley Creek in league play. Morning Basketball Club has also begun, see Ms. Hall for details. Many other clubs and activities are under way, students should check the bulletin board at the top of the main stairs.   Welcome back to Mrs. Youngs who has returned from her maternity leave to Grade 4. Welcome to Ms. Hillier who is teaching Grade 9 Humanities on a temporary contract. She comes to us with strong high school Language Arts experience.   Valley Creek teachers continue to focus on supporting the needs of complex learners as part of our School Development Plan. As part of this professional learning, all staff will be attending a brain research seminar hosted at the school next Friday afternoon.   Thank you to the Valley Creek community for your continued support of student success.   Jason Arrell Principal, Valley Creek School
