Welcome to Music!!

The Following Two Weeks...

In Music, students in grade one will be learning simple songs and clapping/performing simple rhythms (quarter note, eighth note, quarter rest).  They will be encouraged to use their best singing voices and to match pitch with the teacher and with one another.  Grade one students will begin learning songs for the December musical entitled "Snowtastic!", to be performed on the afternoon and evening of Thursday, Dec. 20.

Grade two and three students will continue to review known rhythms and sol feggio notes from last year (do, re, mi, etc.) as well as being introduced to new songs and new rhythms.  Grade two students will begin learning songs for the December musical entitled "Snowtastic!", to be performed on the afternoon and evening of Thursday, Dec. 20.

Grade three and four students will be continuing to review the names of the musical lines and spaces and sol feggio notes on the staff.  These students will be writing musical intervals on the staff as well as writing rhythm notation with music sticks.  Many new games and songs will be learned, each with a specific purpose:  a new rhythm, a new interval on the staff, new creative movement opportunities.

Grade five and six students will be continuing their review of known rhythms and intervals, and will be writing simple melodies and rhythms.  They will move into learning more time signatures  and complex rhythmic patterns.  Musical concepts will be reinforced with music games and the use of percussion instruments such as xylophones and drums.

Discussion Questions...

What new songs have you learned?  Will you sing the new songs?  Which rhythms can you clap?  How do you show the beat while you are singing a song?  Can you share any new music games?

Choir and Handbells...

Grade 4,5 and 6 students may sign up to be in the Division 2 choir.  Rehearsals begin on Monday, Sept. 24 during the second half of the lunch hour.  Students who are in choir are expected to attend all rehearsals and concerts.  Rehearsals will run on Mondays and Wednesdays until the concert on the afternoon and evening of Wednesday, Dec. 12.  There will be a special guest performance at this concert.  In the new year, choir will resume rehearsals in preparation for Choralfest in March.  More details to follow.

The Hand Bell group will be open to all students in grades 5 and 6.  Because of the large number of interested students, there will be two ensembles this year.  Students will be placed in one of the ensembles.  Ensemble 1 will begin rehearsals on Oct. 2 and run every Tuesday during the second half of the lunch hour.  These students will perform in the concert on December 12.  Ensemble 2 will begin rehearsals in the new year (dateTBA) and perform during assemblies and the volunteer tea.
