Happenings in Oct/Nov

Happenings in October

Over the past few months our teachers have been analyzing a number of documents (PATS, Accountability Survey and the Calgary Board of Education’s Student Survey) to inform the development of our School Development Plan. In our work with the School Development Plan, we have identified that our student achievement goals will address specific areas within literacy, numeracy and well-being. Teachers have also identified a number of high impact instructional strategies that will support this work. We will welcome parent input and further discussion about our School Development Plan at our School Council meeting on November 19th at 7:00 in the school’s Learning Commons. Our Annual 2019-2020 Report will be posted on our school website in the near future. It will include a chart of our 2019 Provincial Achievement Test Results.

On October 24th, our School Council hosted the showing of the video Screenagers: Growing Up in The Digital Age for our parent community.  It was an informative presentation about the impact of technology on the adolescent brain, family interactions and schooling. There was also a panel with two psychologists, two social workers in the field and two teachers along with a moderator to answer parent questions following the video. Our students also viewed the video and benefitted from learning more about the impact their technology has on them.

Congratulations to our Girls’ Soccer team for placing second in their division this year! Unfortunately, due to the poor weather the season ended early without any playoffs. A special thank you to our coaches Ms. Hardman and Mrs. Thomas.

The Willow Park Haunted House was another huge success this year thanks to our creative and hardworking Grade 9 students who are in full year Art and Drama! The makeup, sound effects and props were outstanding and added to the scariness when students toured the haunted house. A special thanks to Mr. Shank, Mrs. Pedersen and our parents who volunteered their time to be part of the annual event. We would also like to thank our School Council for donating $700.00 for costumes, props and other supplies for this year’s Haunted House! Your support is always so appreciated!

There are a few staffing updates I would like to share with you. We would like to welcome back Mrs. MacGowan who returned on October 30thto assume her grade 6 teaching position and Mrs. Green, one of our outstanding Educational Assistants, who is back this week to continue supporting our students in Grade. We would like to thank Mrs. Grabowski for supporting these students during Mrs. Green’s absence. Mrs. Grabowski, will now be supporting grade 5 students as Ms. Schmidt has left Willow Park.

On November 1stWillow Park hosted the Calgary Board of Education’s System Fine Arts Professional Learning Day. We had over 200 teachers at our school engaged in the arts! Many of these educators shared with us how impressed they were with the warmth and creativity they felt and observed within our school. A special thank you to Clancy Evans, CBE Fine Arts strategist, Ms. Quinn-Hall, Mrs. Schurig and Ms. Coles for making this day a reality. A special thank you goes out to Mr. Khubyar, Mrs. Thomas, Mr. Shank, Ms. Quinn-Hall and Mrs. Schurig for hosting some of the creative arts sessions for our guest teachers.

Conferences will be held on November 21st and 22nd. It is expected that your children attend these conferences with you as they will be sharing their learning and progress with you at this time. Parents will be able to book their conferences starting on Thursday, November 14that 4:00pm.
