Principal's Message

Pink Shirt Day

This past Wednesday, February 26th was Pink Shirt Day. Two Nova Scotia high school students inspired Pink Shirt Day by organizing their fellow students to wear pink in support of a Grade 9 boy who was being bullied for wearing a pink shirt.
As educators working with young people, we spend a great deal of time helping our students understand when they have been the victim of bullying OR when they have experienced a classmate being unkind.  Alberta Education defines bullying as a conscious, willful, deliberate, repeated and hostile activity marked by an imbalance of power, intent to harm and/or threat of aggression. It can be verbal, social, physical, or cyber-bullying.  Bullying is not a normal part of growing up, and does not build character.   Everyone has a role to play in promoting healthy relationships and creating positive social environments that prevent bullying in our schools, communities and workplaces. This week as a jurisdiction, we have spent time with a laser focus on bullying. At ALS we have talked about when given the choice, to choose to be kind.  Our students spent some time this week thinking about their part in promoting a safe and caring learning community.   What I want to make crystal clear, is that while Pink Shirt Day comes once a year, our focus on being kind and ensuring a safe, caring, respectful and inclusive learning and work environment, is something we do every day at Arbour Lake School. If every at any time you feel we are not meeting this commitment to you and our students, please contact me.   I would also like to take this opportunity to wish Ms. Veronica Cogan our very best as she transitions over to be the administrative assistant at Westview School at the Calgary Young Offenders Centre. Ms. Cogan has been at ALS for two years and we will miss her!    Have a great weekend everyone!   Ms. Nancy Lisi     The Week Ahead at Arbour Lake School:   Mon-Wed Mar 2-4 Banff Music Retreat Tuesday Mar 3 Principal’s Advisory Council - Lunch Friday Mar 6 Jr. Model UN @ Sir Winston Churchill School
