Principal's Message

Fall 2018 | Herbst 2018

September seems to have come and gone in the blink of an eye! When I visit classrooms and speak with parents and teachers, it’s wonderful to hear that students have had a positive first month of learning and are settling into the routines that a new school year brings.
Our school population continues to grow and we now have 302 students. This includes 61 English Language Learners, 57 students who meet criteria for special education codes, and 37 Indigenous students. We are proud to serve such a diverse and dynamic learning community. Currently 50% of our students are in the Community program, and 50% are in the German Bilingual program.
Last year our School Development Plan was focussed on improving student achievement in reading comprehension and I am happy to report that we exceeded our targets for both report card indicators and on the grade 6 Provincial Achievement Tests. For the first time in many years, Bowcroft’s results on all achievement exams exceed the provincial average!
During the 2018-2019 school year our School Development Plan will continue to focus on improving student reading comprehension, but will also include a goal related to mathematics. To reach this goal, we have staffed accordingly, and our Math Coach, Ms. Pavlova, and Assistant Principal, Ms. Collie, have teaching assignments which offer targeted support to students in numeracy.
Unfortunately the unexpectedly cold and wet weather this fall has required us to postpone or adapt some planned activities. This includes our annual Terry Fox run, which we were unable to hold outdoors. Teachers will instead organize a smaller run in our gym as part of their regular physical education classes. We are also postponing the whole school fall trip to Bowness Park, which was scheduled to occur on Wednesday, October 10, as the forecast is for more snow and cold weather next week. With another increase in size this year, we have more students attending our noon supervision program. If your child(ren) are staying at school to eat their lunch
please ensure they are registered. This is required so that we can staff appropriately and have accurate attendance lists. Please use MyCBE/PowerSchool account to register for supervision.
Good communication with teachers is essential for the success of each child. Please check your child’s agenda for important messages, and keep the school informed of any changes to regular routines. We will keep you informed of events important for your family. This includes emails sent through SchoolMessenger. If you have not done so already, please consider subscribing to receive commercial messages, including information about fees, field trips and fundraising opportunities. You may subscribe through your MyCBE/PowerSchool account.
As we approach the long weekend, I am reminded that “Gratitude can transform common days into Thanksgivings, turn routine jobs into joy, and change ordinary opportunities into blessings” (William Arthur Ward). I wish your family all the best for Thanksgiving. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions, concerns or comments. I may be reached at or 403.777.6020 extension 2123.
