Principal's Message

December 2019

As we come to the end of the calendar year, I would like to express my gratitude to our community for excercising December's Virtue of the Month - Patience.  I say this because, despite the fact that our students continue to receive high quality instruction on a daily basis, we are keenly aware of the impact that uncertainty around our budget situation is having on all of our community members. Please understand that our CBE value of Students Come First is at the forefront of all of our decisions. Our leadership team has several potential plans in place that will ensure that all students have access to the learning supports they need. As soon as concrete information becomes available, and decisions are finalized between the CBE and the provincial government, I will communicate our plan to our community. We will be working to minimize the impact of any potential transitions as best we can. In the meantime, we continue to operate as closely to 'business as usual', with the knowledge that our current staff and teachers are in place at least until the end of December.  I have truly appreciated the professionalism and ethic of care that continues to be shown by our teachers and support staff over the past weeks. Our greatest resource is our people, and this is evident in the way that staff support each learner every day, and continue to bring high quality learning experiences to all students. I also have appreciated the patience and support from our parent community. It is wonderful to have had so many collaborative conversations with families who are concerned, but eager to work together as we move forward. Thank you! It is never easy to have more questions than there are answers. My commitment to the community is to communicate any upcoming decisions as soon as information becomes available. It is regrettable that the pace of information has not been as fast as we have might have liked, but I am hopeful that we will have things resolved soon and we can go forward as a learning community from there.  On a more positive note, we are looking forward to seeing our families at our December Learning Conferences! Teachers are working to gather a body of evidence of student learning to share with you to celebrate accomplishments, and to plan next steps for learning. Teachers will also be updating you on some of the changes to our Assessment and Reporting practices in the CBE. On the January report card, we will be using clarified criteria for the 1 - 4 indicators that communicate student achievement. You will also notice some changes to the Stems that describe learning in Mathematics. I would strongly recommend that all families review the How is My Child Doing? document, and the Revised K-9 Mathematics Indicators document. These resources can clarify some of the significant changes to the meaning of the 1 - 4 indicators.  As always, please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions. Our students benefit when we communicate and work together.  See you at Learning Conferences! -Kevin @MrWhitsClass
