Principal's Message

March 30th Update

Dear Escuela Canyon Meadows Families,
We hope you had a great spring break at home with your loved ones.  Many of us took the time to reconnect with family over spring break. We want you to know that our students were never far from our minds.  We miss our work with them every day and are still in a bit of shock that we are living through a pandemic that, unfortunately but understandably, is keeping us from working alongside the children and doing the work that we love.
We want to know how you are doing as a family during this unprecedented time. Your child’s homeroom teacher will be connecting with your family. We are looking to gather information about what tools and resources you have access to in order to begin planning for online learning.  Your child’s homeroom teacher will be contacting you to find out if you do not have access to:
• A computer
• iPad
• Tablet
• Smart phone
• The internet
If you do not have access to any of the above tools, please let your child’s classroom teacher know, if your only option is a paper-based learning package.
The learning that takes place in our classroom spaces each day looks very different than it will online.  Please know that the relationship between student and teacher is a very important part of learning.  Working online does not provide the same opportunity for the teacher to connect with students to know more about how they are approaching their learning.  Frequent conversations and check-ins are invaluable for teachers to establish exactly what students know, what they need next and how they can demonstrate their understanding.  Online learning will be a significant adjustment for all stakeholders- the students, the teachers, and you as parents.  Simply put, online learning cannot replicate the work that takes place inside a classroom.  What we are committed to is to help keep the minds of our students engaged and stimulated through tasks that can be done at home.
Thank you for your patience as CBE worked closely with Provincial agencies to begin the work of online learning.  There is still work to be done in this area so please be vigilant in reading all CBE communication that will be sent out over the coming days and weeks. What online distance learning will look like at Canyon Meadows will be communicated later this week through school messenger (email) and on our website. We will align our distance learning to the requirements stated by Alberta Education:
  Kindergarten – Grade 3
  Focus on language/literacy and mathematics/numeracy
  Teachers will assign an average of five (5) hours of work per student per week
  Grades 4 – 5
  Focus on language/literacy and mathematics/numeracy outcomes; opportunities to incorporate science and social studies outcomes through cross-curricular learning
  Teachers will assign an average of five (5) hours of work per student per week
For this week, as usual, there is access to learning tasks and links for students to use each day on the classroom blogs. An example of this will be access to RazKids, which will provide literacy opportunities in English and Spanish.
We know that the pandemic has created a multitude of complex situations for families.  Please know that we will do our best to support your family- please let us know if you need help connecting with resources to support your family.
Wishing you and your loved ones health during this challenging time,
Sra. Schmidt                Sra. Perera Pérez
