The Blue wing has continued to be a fun, inspiring place to learn. We have been trying our hand at several different activities in the classroom and the kitchen. In the classroom we have been doing a series of literacy activities which have included books by Jan Brett (The Mitten and The Umbrella) as well books such as “Little Grains Big Adventure” and Indigenous books such as the “Beaver and the Porcupine”, and “Hummingbird and the Fire.” This is all part of our ongoing goal of having students become comfortable using Common Core picture symbols in the classroom. We have also done science experiments with food colour, water, baking soda and vinegar, and a variety of different ingredients to observe cause and effect. We continue to do a variety of art activities as well, usually related to the stories we read. Students have had to trace, cut, colour and paste on a variety of materials. Lots of fine motor work! We have also continued to try recipes from all over the world and have even made a variety of different doughs to make bread. We have been making ice cream from a variety of healthy sources, such as bananas and other fruits, and did a unit on potatoes and all the interesting dishes that can be made with them. We are excited for some warmer weather so we can get outside and do more community walks and have students do some learning activities outdoors. Let's go spring!

We have been doing a variety of new and exciting activities down here in the Blue Wing. We have continued our ongoing use of “universal core” vocabulary words in the classroom, incorporating them into art, food studies, and literacy activities and mathematics. In art, we have created winter landscapes, snowmen, Pine trees and engaged in winter themed sensory activities. Our food studies has brought about a plethora of diverse dishes including, but not limited to Borscht, Venezuelan Arepas, vegetable infused muffins, chili and butternut squash soup. All of these dishes have been enjoyed by our students and worth all the effort they put in! We have also dived right into winter themed literature, and have had students answer questions about stories with picture symbols, and construct crafts related to the stories. This has seen great participation by students and we hope to start some other interesting stories after the New Year. Happy Holidays!
