Principal's Message

May 2019

As we reflect on the school year of 2018-2019, we feel a great sense of pride and accomplishment.  Your son or daughter has, on the whole, refined his or her skills, process and edged a little closer to adulthood.  As we commence the month of May and beyond we are confident most students can look back on their year with a feeling of success.
The divisional track meet is to be held on May 8 at Foothills Athletic Park with students participating in distance, sprints, hurtles, high jump, long jump, shot put and discus.
The badminton season is coming to a close.  The end of season tournament play will be as follows:  May 14 Grade 9 students will play at the Sunridge Badminton Centre, Grade 8 on May 15 and the Grade 7 will follow on May 16 at the same venue.
The drama department is putting on a drama production this year called The Wizard of Oz, the Deleted Scene.  The feeder school elementary students will be attending a performance on May 13th in the afternoon.  An afternoon performance for Sansom students will be held on May 14.  Evening performances will be held on May 15 and May 16 for families and the community.  We encourage you to come out and support the students in their performances.
This year, as always, has presented many challenges for us that have in turn created many opportunities for growth as we work toward continued improvement together.  This includes the use of our Homework Hotline which continues to provide the opportunity to communicate daily and with more students to enhance their learning environment.  A reporting and assessment process to support more personalized learning and student ownership of their own learning.  We are also completing year-end inventories and plans are being developed for the 2019-2020 school year.  Our staff embrace the notion of continuous improvement and view their professional development days as an opportunity to learn to serve your children and you even better in the future.
Teachers are preparing students for year-end assessments for Grade 7 and 8 students, as well as preparing Grade 9 students for their provincial achievements exams (P.A.T.).  The first exam will be Language Arts, Part A on Thursday, May 9, 2019 from 9:00 am to 11:00 am for Grade 9 students and Grade 7 and 8 Hum Part A assessments.  The rest of the exams/assessments will be from June 17-25, 2019.  Students must be in attendance for final exams/assessments.  This is the time of year that concerted effort in one’s studies will support positive results for most students.
DID YOU KNOW?  Everyday students and staff are put at risk by parents and guardians who perform illegal u-turns, stop in traffic without signalling or pulling over, or who speed through our school zone.  Please – follow the rules of the road.  If you are dropping off a student, signal and then pull over to the side of the road.
