Principal's Message

February 2019

Report cards were distributed to students on Thursday, January 17, 2019.  Parent/Teacher/Student Conferences were held on Thursday, January 24, 2019 from 5-8 pm.  All interviews were drop in.  We would like to thank all the students and parents who took this opportunity to meet with teachers.
On the sports front we are into the start of our basketball season.  Our Sansom Prestigious Invitational Tournament (S.P.I.T.) for senior girls and boys basketball teams will take place March 8 and 9, 2019.  I’d like to send a special thank you to coaches and parents for their time, travel and support for away games and tournament play as we proceed through the season.  The wrestling season concluded with the final meet at Genesis Centre on January 24th.  The Sansom students participating in the divisional meet represented our school admirably.

Clarence Sansom’s drama production is under way and cast members are rehearsing Tuesdays and Thursdays after school from 3:45 – 4:45 pm.  Backstage crew will start meeting in March to work on props, lighting and sound.  The year’s production is Wizard of Oz: The Deleted Scene, a humorous twist on Dorothy’s adventures in Oz.  There will be student performances on May 13 and 14, and evening performances on May 15 and 16.  Mark your calendar and join us for one of the evening performances!

We would also encourage more parents to take the opportunity to actively be part of the school through participation in the School Council and as school volunteers.  The next school council meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, February 20, 2019 at 6:30 pm in the staff room and all parents/guardians of students are welcome to attend.  There is no limit to what we can achieve when parents are committed to working with their children and the school staff.  Thank you for your continued support.

I am including the previous year’s point of concern for those parents who may have missed the comments on student safety and automobiles around the school.  I would like to thank all those parents and other individuals who have taken this message to heart.  The situation is much improved over previous years with most people moving their vehicles to the side of the road for student drop off.  Also, there appears to be far fewer illegal U-turns.  We appreciate everyone’s concern for student safety and we hope the situation continues to improve as winter and icy conditions continue.

The safety of our students at the time of drop off and pick up of students is a point of concern.  Parents must pull off to the curb when dropping off or picking up students (to the curb means everywhere but the bus zone in front of the school).  Currently parents are stopping in the middle of the road and either blocking a number of vehicles behind them or prompting vehicles to go around them both to the left and right.  It is also inconsiderate because it blocks the vehicles that have appropriately pulled to the curb.  This is simply disrespectful and poor adult modelling for all concerned when vehicles following safe driving practices are blocked in.  This puts your child at considerable risk.  Most infractions occur at the front of the school on the west side of the building.  It is illegal to perform a U-turn in a school zone.  Again it endangers students who are crossing the road to the school.  On the south side of the school going east there is a dead end turn around which allows you to drop your child off on the school side of the road and proceed west, which appears to be the direction most vehicles wish to exit.  Also, students who get out of vehicles must look before proceeding across the street to the school.  There is no amount of time or inconvenience that is worth the injury or death of a child.  Blame, right or wrong, is irrelevant when a 2,000 pound vehicle and a child come in contact with each other.  Please consider not only the safety of your child but everyone’s safety when driving around the school.
