Principal's Message

June Principal Message

Dear Parents/Guardians,
As I write a message to close out our last month in the school year I am faced with very different emotions and thoughts. We usually have the voices of students and teachers through out the school. There is laughter and learning that is obvious and can be heard.  It has been an incredible adjustment for all of us these past few months.  As teachers have been coming into school to pack up student belongings there have been comments about seeing the March calendar date that is still on their wipe board. The reality of not seeing students in a typical learning format has sunk in.  In saying all of this my pride is huge for the work of not only teachers but our students in the resiliency which has been shown through this unprecedented time of learning.  We are also so appreciative to parents in how you have supported ongoing learning.  We know this has not been an easy time and navigating learning for your child at home while balancing your own work and other responsibilities has been significant. It has been inspiring to see the motivation for learning, especially the focus on reading continue.  Students can regress in reading progress when they do not continue to practice – many of our students are maintaining their reading skills and some have even shown improvement during this time.   Please encourage continued reading over the summer months to promote the joy and love of reading and to support your child sustaining their reading skills.
Please come by June 15th, 16th or 17th to collect your child’s belongings and return any library books or laptops.  We have to adhere to only one person per family coming into the school. Please follow the protocol when you arrive to ensure safety for everyone.  You may be asked to wait outside until it is safe to enter.
Please remember we have moved to a traditional calendar for the 2020-21 school year. Our bell times have changed. The morning bell is 8:57 and the dismissal bell is 3:40 Monday-Thursday and Friday is Early Dismissal being 8:57 - 12:55. More information will be available as we know how re-entry will look next year.  Students’ last day of school is June 26, 2020.
We will have a few staff changes for next year.  We will be saying farewell to Yuki Sato from Tan Team. We wish her every success as she heads off to new adventures and is off from teaching next year on a deferred leave.  We know her family will enjoy having her home to spend more time with them. Yuki has been a wonderful asset to Dr. Oakley School both as a classroom teacher and in countless other ways. She has been instrumental in organizing our residencies which this year included the hoop dancing and drumming.  Her musical talents will also be missed as she will often play the piano for assemblies and wrote a beautiful song last year which depicted our students’ experiences at Dr. Oakley. Thank you for the many contributions you have given our Dr. Oakley family Mrs. Sato.  We will have other new staff joining us once the staffing process is completed this year.
If you have not already registered for transportation please make sure to log on to your PowerSchool account to do so by June 14th. Late registrations could result in bus stops being further away.
We know there are only two more weeks of school left, please involve your child in the on going learning and google meets as best you can.  IPPs are being shared by teachers and report cards will be available by logging into MyCBE/PowerSchool on June, 25th.
We wish you a safe and healthy summer and look forward to our next year of learning and welcome retuning student back and many well wishes to our students who are transitioning.
In the Spirit of Generosity and Belonging and with deepest gratitude -
Denise Nimmo – Principal of Dr. Oakley School
