Principal's Message

Welcome to Dr. Oakley School 2019-20

​We hope that families all enjoyed a wonderful summer and are excited to embark on the new school year.  Some students are returning and others are joining us for the first time. Every school year is new and exciting and as we establish new teams we work very thoughtfully to create warm, welcoming, ​inspiring learning communities with the new configuration of students. Many of the activities and tasks are directed towards this goal to support students’ level of positive well-being and to inspire them to be greater risk takers in their learning.  
Throughout the school year we will continue to focus on this work through the Virtues Project.  The Virtues Project guides our practice in Character Education. The purpose is to help foster a culture of character where respect, patience, self-regulation, tolerance and joy for learning are among the virtues our children develop. The teachings of this project are integrated into all aspects of our school day. We have found that through careful and intentional work integrating virtues into the daily life of Dr. Oakley, we are not only supporting individual students to meet their potential but are developing an inclusive, supportive learning community for all. We will continue to update parents of our virtues project work through our school communication, assemblies and other various strategies.
As you are aware we provide very rich, intensive, literacy programming for our students. Literacy instruction is immersed across all curricular areas.  Mathematics instruction is also very intentional and explicit to support the unique learning needs of our students.   Our students are grouped according to grades in multi-aged configurations. Each grouping has approximately 20 students and two teachers. For an hour a day the grouping of students is supported by three teachers. Each of these learning teams is identified by a color (tan, teal, yellow, red, orange, purple, blue and green). To further support students we also have a mathematics/technology learning leader, two literacy learning leaders, a literacy support teacher and a physical education teacher.   

Within each learning community, students will be grouped in a flexible manner depending upon the learning activities and the needs of the students. Each student will have a ‘responsibility’ teacher who will have final responsibility for developing the student’s Individualized Program Plan (IPP). It is an expectation, however, that all teachers within the team have instructional responsibility for all students.
 
Within the student opening package you will find a variety of forms to be completed and returned to the school as soon as possible, including an optional milk program for any student that would like milk at lunch.  At this time we are not sending out any additional fee information as CBE is waiting on information from the Provincial Government.  This information will be shared with parents as soon as we receive it at the school.
 
We look so forward to working with you to help our Dr. Oakley Eagles soar to new heights in their learning.
